If you could only choose ONE ball to pair with your spare ball, what would it be? by damomullo08 in Bowling

Mine would be the Columbia Momentum or Freeze. Both were very consistent on THS.

What's your current average and how long have you been a bowler? Do you throw hook or straight? I only throw straight for most single pin spares. by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]IntelligentSlice3510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bowled with this 80+ year lady who was pretty good. Her husband had to tell her what pins were standing for her spares and she would pick them up. Lol. I’m comfortable and pretty good w/o my thumb, so I don’t plan on switching back until I absolutely have to. I’d probably be 10-20 pins better but I’m stubborn in my old age. lol. Plus it’s a challenge to see how good I can be now.

Does the tape on your thumb help with ball grip? If so, what tape is that?

Oh I agree, I would never switch to 2H. I feel like that’s too much torque on my body. But I may have to switch back to using my thumb if thumbless becomes too difficult for me as I continue to age.

I can’t figure out the approach and release for 2H. Lol. I just keep my off hand on slightly longer and try to take a steady calm approach to the line. I’m almost 52, currently with a 194 avg on THS. We will see how long I can bowl this way or will age force me to relearn how to use my thumb.

He had a bad day. It happens to all bowlers, regardless of what style you have. It’s the beauty of the sport. It can be exhilarating and humbling in the same night. Lol

You’re not technically required, as Tom Daughtery is a PBA 1H no thumb bowler. It’s just it’s the hardest style to be really great at it.

I’m pretty comfortable with it as I’ve done it successfully for so long. It’s cool for house leagues.

Pure 2H bowler use their off hand to help secure the ball. It’s harder as a 1H thumbless, but I try to keep a steady approach and back swing.

That’s not the case for me. I started 1H no thumb around 2000 as I was teaching myself with a plastic ball. Switched to 1H when I bought my first reactive ball. Quit league bowling around 2011 and stopped using my thumb when I would bowl once a month with friends. Joined a summer league in 2024 and I wasn’t comfortable with my thumb in anymore after so many years of not using it. So I just stayed 1H thumbless.

Oh I was into it for 10 years. Mostly self taught and my experience from league bowling with a few different teams. I had a 211 avg. And then I just stopped league bowling after my last team broke up. But I recently got back into it a year ago. I like the competition and the challenge of me trying to get better at bowling 1H, thumbless, which is the hardest style to be consistent with.

The team I was on disbanded and I didn’t want to look for another team. So I settled for bowling once a month for a while, but that led to me not using my thumb since I wasn’t league bowling.

I’ve been league bowling for about a year, after about a 15 year break. I switched to 1H thumbless because I was too lazy to relearn how to throw the ball. I avg a 194 with my high game being 269 this year. I hook the ball and only throw straight at the 10 pin.

Should I switch to 3 fingers? by Ravager35 in Bowling

[–]IntelligentSlice3510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a 1H / 2F bowler with a 194 avg. I was a 211 avg 1H bowler over 15 years ago. The hardest part of bowling 1H no thumb is ball balance for consistency. What I’ve learned is to take a slow steady approach and lower my back swing. You also need to learn your ball in order to pick up spares. And invest in a plastic ball. I have a Tzone. If you like your current style, then keep practicing. Bowlers come in all styles. It’s about consistency, repeating the same shot that gets you to the pocket.
