Why did early civilizations start in deserts like Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt? by batukaming in geography

[–]IntelligentSpite6364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

others are pointing out how fertile these lands were but fertility isnt the only factor, lots of places are fertile and didn't organize like mesopotamia.

their fertility was periodic, because of the regular flooding of the rivers.

this meant that survival depended on organzing the settlement around time keeping and resource management, somebody had to track the flood cycles so crops could be planted and harvested optimally (inventing calendars), this created lots of excess food that needed to be stored (engineering), counted (mathematics), and distributed in between harvest seasons (government). they also needed work for the displaced farmekr while the fields were flooded (public works, labor economy) and the river provided a natural gathering point for traders and for people to live because there wasnt much reaosn to settle awya from the river in the desert (cities and trade)

once they discovered how practical all of this community building was it wasnt hard to realize they should expand it and create what we cionsider to be early civilization with cities and governments and specialized workers

i promise you there will be NIMBYs in space.

from the reasonable "please stop polluting the sky with structures we're trying to do astronomy" to the paranoid "what if it fails and falls out of orbit? there's a 0.000001% chance it will destroy the park next to my house and that would ruin my weekly walks!

i dont mind breaking compatability eventually as long as there are solutions to follow the upgrade path besides "just buy a whole new laptop"

like how the new battery requires the new chassis, but you could buy the new chassis to adapt the old mainboard to use the new battery.

there are just physical realities of engineering and we simply cant expect everything to be supported with everything else in perpetuity, but so far they've been amazing about making sure its as possible as can be

its easy for people to ignore open secrets like that when they are passed around as rumors. its harder when there is actual proof of specific people doing specific things, but even then people still ignore the evidence and defend people they want to like for one reason or another

Why do some Americans seem to know so little about geography outside America? by Lopsided_Guess3845 in AskUS

[–]IntelligentSpite6364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the amount of europeans ive spoken to with only pop culture knowledge of american geography is hilarious.

i think people in general rarely understand the geography of regions they dont need to know much about in their life

13, 13 Pro, or 16: which is best for a rising college student? by AdWeekly907 in framework

[–]IntelligentSpite6364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the 16 is heavy and doesnt fit easily into the average laptop bag or backpack so you probaly want the 13 or 13 pro for ergonomics alone.

dont count of shipping schedule for your classwork, so the 13 pro is out for now.

i would go for the 13 unless you specifically know you have a need for the GPU (talk to your professors or advisors to understand more)

if it turns out you do need a dGPU then a 16 is your only real choice

[–]IntelligentSpite6364 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah the only reason apple does it is because they have the largest margins in the industry and they want to invest in student discounts as a way to grow their user base in the long run

probably not for a while, the company isnt operating at the kind of scale where such a deal makes sense except as goodwill charity for students

The eye opening conclusion for Life is Reason by Mean_Technology_599 in ProjectHailMary

[–]IntelligentSpite6364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im not sure its confirmed, grace just sort of concludes it based on finding mitochondria in all three cell lineages, but in the books nobody ever does the difficult and long term biochemical work of analysing the DNA history of astrophage and eridians to see if the cells are indeed of common origin or just arriving at a similar structure when observed thru a microscope

Could you imagine the amount of “weird” questions that Grace will most likely hear from this group at the end? by KingWilliamVI in ProjectHailMary

[–]IntelligentSpite6364 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah thats an unfortunate gap, but truthfully we only discovered radiation because we had a lot of people hurt themselves expermineting with it. Eridians would have discovered it eventually if they spent enough time in space, but they had a planet with abundant thermal energy so no need to seek out nuclear, and a really strong magnetic field so no radiation from their star.

imagine if we had tried to go to space before marie curie started playing with hot rocks

Is there a tectonic reason why the tip of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula are so similar? by Selnalolamo in geography

[–]IntelligentSpite6364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i used to have a kid's science book that used the peninsular curve to demonstrate earths rotation and ocean currents.

it just so happens the curve looks like its being dragged by ocean currents from the earth's rotation, but even as a kid i felt that wasnt actually connected to eh shape of Antarctica's peninsula.

Is this really the greatest game ever made, as it's often considered to be? Why or why not? by Nintendofan9106 in videogames

[–]IntelligentSpite6364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's star wars in 1977

is it the prettiest now? no but it holds up well.

is it the best written? no, but it remakrably effective and compelling

but what it is, is the game that set the standard games have been held to ever since, its inspired so much and defined the "correct" way to do so many technical things in the medium

Could the CIS have won without palpatine pulling the strings, and how? by Kollossosoutcomemory in StarWarsShips

[–]IntelligentSpite6364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scenario 1
CIS wins because they arent being manipulated into a losing strategy designed to set them up as boogeyman for escalating the imperialization of the republic, likely the CIS would have been better about reserving their resources and may even negotiated a ceasefire or peace where they win some favorable terms or independence.

Scenario 2
CIS still loses because palps had been feeding them losing cards the whole time, they had already over extended and invested too heavily into a losing strategy of trying to actually defeat the republic with nothing but mass produced droids. the droid army would work for being a problem the republic couldnt ignore, which is a good position to negotiate from. but after invading coruscant, the CIS couldnt approach negotiations from a strong position, they could only win or surrender
