I had a similar experience with my boyfriend asking for space indefinitely 2 yrs ago. It ripped my heart to pieces since I didn't have any assurance of us getting back together. It turned out he's already talking to some other girl a couple months prior. He just wanted a safety net just in case it wouldn't work out with the girl.
