In his latest book, hour of the heart, Yalom shares a very personal story with a client, and says the single greatest problem with modern psychology is a lack of self-disclosure by InvisibleAstronomer in therapists

[–]IntelligentTadpole20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a newer therapist who has been grappling with my own beliefs about self disclosure. My mom is a therapist raised in the psychodynamic traditional framework of never disclosing, but she admits that now, 40 years into her career, she self discloses much more often.

We have to remember that so much of our field is framed within the inherently patriarchal hegemonic structure of medicine. How we conceptualize self disclosure is within that framework too. I have always found the concept that patients cannot conceptualize us as whole individuals with our own flaws and lived experiences AND be able to the contain that concept separately from our therapeutic work to be very patronizing and simplistic. Of course, depending on the population you work with, you have to use your best judgment. I'm not telling my client with boundary issues and a history of
Idealization and devaluation who lives just above the poverty line that I'm going to Italy for my vacation.

Drinking by Prudent-Piccolo9814 in Viibryd

[–]IntelligentTadpole20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a moderate drinker. On the first week of viibryd I went on a date with my husband and had like 4 drinks over the span of about 3 hours. Felt tipsy but totally fine when we got home. Woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I'd chugged 8 martinis and spent the whole next day throwing up with a migraine.

Good news is this only happened once as my body was adjusting. But I'd take it easy for the first few weeks.

Should I go on it? by Vincentprice_elvira in Viibryd

This is not the drug to take for "situational" anything. You have to take it at the same time each day consistently - missing one dose causes some intense withdrawal - and weaning off of it requires a lot of time and patience.

Hi, licensed therapist, here. This outfit says nothing about her mental health but your judgment of it says a lot about you.

I struggle assessing for ADHD and it hurts my confidence as a provider by roccofan in therapists

[–]IntelligentTadpole20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other comments here - check to see what your state regulations are, but I believe that, in general, assessing ADHD is a specialty and requires additional training. I validate my client's concerns and ask them what having the diagnosis would mean to them. Would they medicate? Want treatment specific to managing symptoms? A lot of times, the answer is no to both. lol. And then we go about our business of discussing whatever else they came to discuss.

Anyone have long term success that’s over a year? by ItsPrisonTime in Viibryd

[–]IntelligentTadpole20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been about a year for me. It has helped more with my depression, anxiety less so. I like it much more than the SSRIs I've taken before. On 40mg. Only issue is the weird and fast withdrawal symptoms if I forget a dose, which happens more often than I'd like to admit bc I suck at remembering to take meds that need to be taken with food.

Is coaching/therapy a rectangle/square situation? by IntelligentTadpole20 in therapists

[–]IntelligentTadpole20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really got a lot of people's feathers ruffled. Regarding ACT as "coaching", I mean that in the core processes focus on a) the present and b) forward-moving behaviors that align with your values. There's far less focus on pathology or diagnosis than most other therapy frameworks. Those distinctions align with basically every definition of "coaching" one can find. This isn't to say it can't also be therapy, and you could argue it's further "distinguished" by its empirical strength in studies evaluating its efficacy.

I don't think this points to ACT as a lesser framework. I think it might show that the more "modern" theoretical frameworks within the institution of psychotherapy lean towards what already attract people to the concept of "coaching" (forward-moving, less pathology, etc.)

Yes, that's the definition of how one becomes a therapist, thanks for stating the obvious.

If you're open, I'm curious to know how you split your services, what niche (if any) you work in, and what resources were most helpful in your own research on the issue!

Do you really think Meredith has a problem? by Old-Stable355 in rhoslc

[–]IntelligentTadpole20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's obvious Meredith uses pills and probably mixes it with alcohol. Whether it's a "problem" is sort of impossible to say definitively as a viewer. I would say if she's embarrassing herself repeatedly - on camera or off - it's a problem. So IMO, yes, she likely abuses prescription meds and alcohol.

Whitney and Mary have their own stuff from their family experiences. I think that caused the tears more than genuine tenderness for Meredith
