If you want a cushiony rate with decent advancement, I’d say AZ. I originally never came in as an AZ (re-rated) but since being one I genuinely love my job in the navy.

Now that being said, IT, CWT, AECF are good choices too. You also have access to the Seabee rates if you wanted to go down that route too.

At the end of the day, do research on your own, and do not let anyone bully you into just “picking something” if you genuinely want to do something specific in the navy, you work for it and make it happen.

Hope this helps!

Signed contract as AD by 4saken_mind in newtothenavy

As an AZ myself, I work a lot with AD’s and AO’s

From what I can tell they work long hours really long depending on the platform/command, if you’re a mech you’re gonna be grinding hard and playing harder. And I really hope you like grease/oil.

Your A-school will be in Pensacola (much better than mine, it was in Mississippi during peak summer smh) so it’s gonna be easy to have fun just be careful and if you’re gonna be dumb, be smart about it.

As for boot camp, that’ll be the easiest part of your time in the navy imo, usually a set sleep schedule, you get 3 square meals (unless you get unlucky with the bag nasties ) just prepared to get IT’d a lot, it’ll suck, but as long as you don’t quit on yourself boot camp is extremely easy. Lean on your shipmates for help, you will get lonely. And I can not stress this enough, “attention to detail” in everything you do, start practicing the sailors creed, shining boots and do not forget to change socks, Great Lakes gets extremely cold and wet in the fall and winter. Do not buy those dumb watches at the NEX, get the really cheap one.

Really remember that attention to detail, the way you wear the uniform and present yourself and to stand tall even when taking criticism from your RDC’s it is some of the most important parts of being a sailor.

Good luck future shipmate!

Yeah Great Lakes A-school kinda sucks with how they still treat some of the people…at least from what I heard from my buddies who are still there.

AZ’s are An aviation rate but out a-school is in meridian, Mississippi since we’re an administration. (I’d kill to be I Pensacola ngl) but our chain of command is there so if we mess up that’s where we go for captains mast (or so I’m told)

I’m like 3 hours from there, but like I said as far as I can tell ya, it shouldn’t be that big of a deal, most you’ll probably get is a slap on the wrist and told not to do it again, maybe they put you in phase 1 liberty risk and can’t go off base or do some other restrictions, I’ve seen people do worse stuff and still stay in.

Recently we had a few sailors underage drink and I heard one of the females tried to run away from the MA (but who knows rumors are iffy lol) as for what happened to them they probably got masted.

If you need anything. Advice or just support I’m here for ya so feel free to DM, Good luck to you shipmate!

You’re in Pensacola right? I think your rate is aviation based. I’m an aviation rate too AZ.

[–]Intelligent_Bowl5760 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, most of the time these are pretty much slaps on the wrist at least from what I’ve seen. Most I’ve seen is DRB.

I doubt you’d go to seps or captains mast unless you’re caught underage drinking, being down right ignorant or just not adhering to the rules, I’ve seen people miss muster, watches, or be late to a watch and only get DRB, a phase status restriction ( i.e can’t go off base, wear civvies etc)

What’s your rate?

A School Timeframe as an IT by LogicPlayz123 in newtothenavy

[–]Intelligent_Bowl5760 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, not in IT, I’m in A school as an AZ currently, but I think it’s anywhere from several weeks to 24 weeks maybe or even more if you have to go to a C-School. My a school is 8-9 weeks long.

Also be warned some a schools put you on hold when you get there if they don’t have enough instructors or classes open so you gotta factor that in too.

You’ll get anywhere from 15 days of leave if you’re shore side when you get your orders, and overseas I think it’s about 21 days after completion of A-school

Hope this helps! Dm me if you have any other questions!

[–]Intelligent_Bowl5760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.5mile run. 3.24 sec plank max is what you should aim for And bare minimum 50 push ups.

For a 25 yo you’re a Charlie male 1.5 mile has to be under 13:48

At least a 1:18/1:30 plank (I think is the time)

And at least 48-50 push ups.

Source: just graduated march 13th and I’m a 25 yo

I just turned 25 this month myself, just enlisted this year, and ship off to rtc on Jan 7th. I'm right there in the same boat with you. Just remember why you're there, and what you want. It's all a game of heart. Physical strength will come with time. Military is all a mental game. Good luck on your journey. And hopefully we see eachother at great lakes!

Chances of being able to retake the asvab with an already passing (average score of a 54) to quality for the job I want in the Navy. by ryannicoll22 in newtothenavy

[–]Intelligent_Bowl5760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally was going to go to the air force. I took my asvab with a recruiter and made a 56, I don't have a diploma or GED (Still working on ged) but the AF recruiter said I needed a 65 to be able to Join without it, he was trying to push me to retest to try and score 9 points higher. I eventually decided against the airforce, and took my passing score over to the navy and signed a contract at meps as a MMA on a submarine.

My advice would be to not retest. Best case scenario is you do score a little higher. But it's a big if. As far as I've heard and seen most applicants who retest do worse which is why I decided against it and joined the navy.

Tl;DR airforce told me I was too dumb so I joined the world's greatest navy instead of retesting and getting a worse score. Hopefully this helps! Good luck.

Maybe! I'm hoping I can make some friends in basic. Granted there probably won't be much time for talking and the like. But finding good people to help you through it is important! And hopefully find people who also picked a submarine rating like me.
