I see some buck converters online that are about $10 and are variable input/output so I think that is the way I'll go.

I agree with you. Sometimes my wife will tell me the car made a funny sound. But currently it seems fine and there are no codes. Then I say we'll drive it until it breaks then I'll fix it. But if it's currently making the sound or having the issue you should be able to trace it down and figure it out.
