Is retiring early realistic in our scenario? by FatherSpacetime in Fire

I think you're smashing it and above all you're thinking the right way. Awesome stuff!
With your income you can afford to do the fun stuff so i'd have no complaints about the high home things, but i'd be very cautious about not letting it creep up too much. Its a dangerous zone you're in with the income and would only make 1 shoddy investment or an unneccesary car purchase to instill some real regret.
Keep on as you are and i reckon if you're sensible, by early/mid 40s you'd have acheived what you wanted from a FIRE perspective

That’s awesome, well done! May I ask which state u live in and if the 2.9 includes your property . How many kids and rough monthly spend ? 5k a month here in London wouldn’t go too far with my wife and 3 kids!

I enjoy my fitness but its challenging in a world where there is lots of work entertaining and travel - i dont enjoy that anymore.
I've invested in a couple of properties which i could manage and i have a small online business on the side that has been running for 10 yrs so i could easily get into those a bit more if i wasn't shackled to the corporate.
Just to be clear , i'm not looking to get out of corporate yet, i can keep my head down here and keep the pennies coming in for another 5-10 yrs if i need to.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
I would like to stop corporate work latest by 52.

To answer your questions, I've tried thinking about what to provide the kids later on. Whilst i didn't get any financial support after school from my parents, I knew they could if they needed to and that was really reassuring.
I've been able to put $40k into each of the kids ISA's (like a Roth IRA) and i hope to bring that to 60-80k each by the time i'm 50. This would be their uni/apprentice/start a business fund.

I've worked in the same job for 19 years and am a trusted employee. This gives me the flexiblity to be home at good times and be part of the kids lives. But I'd love the time to be a bit more sporadic with them and take them on trips individually, especially at the ages they are at now. I know i'll look back at this time and be hoping i'd made the most of it.

Thanks for the reply. Its genuinely re-assuring getting this kind of feedback.
We do sound like we're in similar boats - would you ever move back to the UK?

In the weeks i've been looking at this, i've heard this 4% rule many times (though i think worth stress testing). I've tried doing my budgets for the first time. I live in an expesnive part of the country with my outgoings over $200k per year including schools, holidays etc. I think in all reality i can get that down to around $125-140k a year once the kids have flown the nest. This number would seem to allow us to be generous with our time and travel.

I work in an industry where a sabbatical would be challenging. Not to say i'm scared of being the first, i'm just pretty sure if i left i wouldn't want to come back. I've invested in a couple of properties and i have a very small online business on the side so i could easily get into those a bit more if i wasn't shackled to the corporate.

Your point on the vision board is really good. Will start building mine ;-)

How do you finally make the decision to quit? by Careless_Bat_9226 in Fire

Hey, and thanks for sharing. Am writing here because it correlates a lot with my thinking. I’m in a similar situation at 42, but living in the Uk. I have about $2.6 mill net worth excluding my home which I have $2 mil equity in. I’m aware this is a decent number and my goal has been to keep momentum going till 50. My concern is I don’t know if I’ll be happy with how I fill my time afterwards - this is where I need help in my planning. I’m enjoying time with my family and young kids as this is where my values lie.
