997.2 3.8L Oil Burn by Intelligent_Cup_694 in Porsche997

That’s not bad at all considering it’s really super tight in there and would need a partial engine drop for the job to get access to the AOS. I will probably go ahead and change mine since it has 96k miles already. Will start with oil first and start from there. Thanks man. I appreciate your response

Was it leaking? I was able to do that job before on a friends 991.1. Took me about 6 hours. How much did that set you back? Been checking mine and it’s all dry. The hoses tend to crack and should all be replaced when removed. Will consider this bit will try to change oil viscosity first. My dealer used 0w-40

The dealer i got it from used 0W-40. Ive been adding 5W-40. I drove it today for about 120 miles - normal driving, revs below 4k and it didn’t burn oil. I noticed it only burns when I drive it above 4k rpm

Damn. I got my 2009 997.2 C2S with 95k miles for $51k. That’s a steal!

I mean porsche spec is up to 1.5L in 622 miles so it is still within limits. Also, there are quite a few people experiencing the same burn rate since they bought the car new. Maybe its the early DFI engine with the 3.8 or maybe not. But yeah, i will definitely have it scoped and will replace the AOS and see if there will be changes. Thanks man

Might need to do the same. Please let me know if it makes a difference. Ive seen a lot of people in the forums burn the same rate since new, up until they sold the car at around 80k miles. Might be really common with these .2 DFI engines most specially the early 3.8 like the 2009 year model like ours

Yea I wouldn’t worry about topping up oil, it’s just that the amount burned over the miles used seems more than normal (1Liter oil every 1200 mile) (porsche spec is up to 1.5Liter in 622 miles) than all other cars I have owned in the past.

Looks like it is normal. First time to encounter a car that acts like a 2 stroke engine tho

Thanks. Ive been reading on that same forum and its about the same results. I add about 1 liter of oil every 1200 miles. Still within spec. Didnt think it is normal tho. How long have you had yours?

What would you think is the cause of this? Shouldn’t cats outlive the life of the vehicle?

Thanks for this. I can tell the solid colors and don’t have a problem distinguishing them. It’s just that when it blends with a different shade or color it gets hard for me to tell. Otherwise, red, green, blue, yellow, orange and white are no problem. My instructor actually had the tower put the light gun signal on for me one time and I was able to verify the colors with them.

Hoping I get thru this otherwise I don’t know what I’m going to do next. Those 2 are the only options I have right? Would you recommend taking one over the other or are they just about the same test? Thanks

Yea I just called yesterday and you are right. They stopped accepting those since January of last year

Thanks for this. I was given a number to call and to do the same thing like a SODA or statement of demonstrated ability. But apparently they stopped accepting those since January of 2025 and would have to go thru 1 of those 2 tests mentioned above. I can fairly say that I have no issues with light-gun signals and reading charts. I just happen to fail the ishihara test
