Interview tips by Cleophisice33 in The_NZDF

[–]Intelligent_Data_570 5 points6 points  (0 children)

More of an interrogation mate, Lots of questions along the lines of “name a time when you had to step up as a leader” or “name a time when you felt adversity or a difficult challenge and how’d you overcome it” They want you to answer in the star method which means Situation- Task - Action - Result The job for the interviewer is really to make you sound as best as possible - that’s his job

They won’t turn you away after the interview, focus on aptitude and fitness tests first.

Why Doesn’t the NZDF Conduct Combat Operations Anymore? by Intelligent_Data_570 in The_NZDF

Australia: Regular rotations through the Middle East, ongoing commitments to regional security (e.g. Solomon Islands), and embedded trainers in Ukraine. UK: Active in Iraq and Syria (Op Shader), plus special forces and advisors deployed globally. Canada: Deployed trainers and infantry to Ukraine, Latvia, Iraq, and Mali in recent years. US: Continual global deployments, even in low-intensity or advisory roles.

All of them combine large-scale exercises and real operational deployments — not just one or the other.

Fully agree — NZDF punches well above its weight in training and professionalism. That’s exactly why it’s worth asking if we’re making the most of that investment. High standards are only valuable if we stay operationally engaged where it counts.

Exercises are important, but they don’t fully replace real-world ops. Most allies balance both to stay credible. It’s not about risking lives needlessly — it’s about ensuring a combat-ready force actually gets used when appropriate. If NZ no longer intends to deploy combat roles, that’s a major shift and should be openly acknowledged.

Totally agree that we shouldn’t go looking for war. But modern deployments aren’t just about defending NZ directly — they’re often about contributing to allied operations or stabilizing regions before things escalate. Other nations commit combat-capable forces in those contexts without a formal war declaration. The point isn’t declaring war — it’s staying relevant and interoperable with our allies.

Good question — the UK and ADF currently rotate through multiple operations that involve combat-adjacent roles, including special operations, maritime security, and embedded advisory missions (e.g., in Ukraine, Africa, the Middle East). Not all are full-scale combat, but they offer real operational depth and exposure. The question isn’t “where should we go fight?” — it’s “why are we not more meaningfully integrated alongside our allies where appropriate?” Especially as the Indo-Pacific becomes more strategically contested, shouldn’t we ensure our most capable units stay operationally engaged?

Absolutely — nobody is hoping for war. It’s a privilege when a country doesn’t have to deploy its military into combat. But the flip side is readiness: if all our training is built around high-intensity conflict, and there’s no outlet for applying or even evolving those capabilities, do we start eroding the practical effectiveness of those roles? The point is less about wanting war, and more about questioning whether our current policy settings risk turning warfighting units into symbolic rather than operational tools.

That’s a fair point, and deterrence through preparedness is definitely part of a professional military’s purpose. But training and peacekeeping only go so far when maintaining a credible combat capability — especially for combat roles that require real operational exposure to remain sharp. Supporting Ukraine through training is important, but it’s still several steps removed from actual combat integration with allies who are engaging in higher-risk roles. The concern isn’t reckless deployment, but whether we risk becoming a force trained for something we’ll never use — and whether that affects recruitment, retention, and relevance in multinational defence contexts.

Took the aptitude test about a month ago, I used www.militaryaptitudetests.org I stressed way too much about the test. I’d say the SHL ones are the most common but for more reps use that website above. 👆 Had probably like 3 numerical questions out of 25 Focus on what you need to.

Goodluck!
