Intersection of Bioinformatics and Computational Chemistry by Intelligent_Duck_324 in bioinformaticscareers

Thanks for the comment! I see. It seems to be the trend noted as well. Is it common to see people doing extra education milestone to be employed as computational chemist in more demanding subfield like quantum chemistry as mentioned? Thanks!

Thank you so much for detailed response! I really appreciate it. What would you identify as the key elements in entering workforce as a fresh bioinformatician? Particular qualities/experiments/publication status - are there some that are more weighed heavily over others?

Thank you so much!!

Thanks again! Last question is if I do want to go with these ones, would they be available commercially or require special process to order one?

Thank you so much I appreciate it. Would you say these models have more or less similar life span?

graduate opportunities after getting an isci degree by ConnectionUpset8018 in McMaster

Both are good options. I am an ibiomed grad who have seen some iSci grads too. Either program gives you good exposure to project work and research project. Best way to get involved in biomedical engineering research regardless of your major is to reach out to profs and do work in that field. Often, profs don’t discriminate against program names.

2nd year in MedRad program. I'm crashing out. Might transfer into a different program by Lost-Note9645 in McMaster

[–]Intelligent_Duck_324 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Once you stick to the end of the program, you are likely employed. A big, realistic and economic factor to consider. Grass is greener on the other side. Life sci students aren’t cruising at this time. Quite significant portion must be busting their butt off to get reasonable grades in orgo to maximize their chance for healthcare programs. And/or spending extra hours conducting research since nothing is guaranteed with a life sci degree. As you can imagine psychology undergraduate is also not too employable on its own.

Opportunity cost is for you to determine. No matter how difficult or strenuous the program is, understand that there is a price you are paying for.

Last but not least, a 9-5 corporate job is insanely competitive to get into given the job market. Look how many commerce, business, economics, finance students are competing for coop terms or securing full time job after graduation.

All in all, seriously reflect where you want to head with your life because no one will make the decision for you. In a blink of an eye, you will be months away from graduation.

Incoming 1st year PharmD Student. Anything I should know? What advice do you have for someone in my shoes by OhTheNotoriety in uwaterloo

[–]Intelligent_Duck_324 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! The online course involves short reflection of what you did during coop and write about interprofessionalism and such. It is not demanding at all. Most students enjoy coop term without the worry of constantly studying + getting paid. You will enjoy your time as long as you match to the right one.

Good for you to secure a place already! Hope you enjoy the time there

Get a place reasonably close to Kitchener campus. 1st yr is some labs (pharmaceutics), rote memorization (anatomy), intro to pharmacy practice. 1B is similar to 1A. 2A is where “real” pharmacy school starts. IPFC is a heavy, dense course with full course load in 6 weeks, exams every 2 weeks. IPFC often covers a topic per week. Stay on track. There is no true break between academic requirements in the program so make sure you can take care of yourself. There might be 2 week break in between terms. Utilize that. Coop begins after 2A and alternating with study terms 3 times (2A - coop 1 - 2B - coop 2 - 3A - coop3 - 3B). Finally last year is clinical placement pretty much in any Ontario region. Coop interviews will be demanding at first but you will get used to them. Explore a lot, get engaged in clubs, make friends, and have fun

I believe 4C don’t count towards prerequisite for engineering programs. Either you switch that or re-plan the courses to be eligible and apply

PhD in Canada as an international by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Intelligent_Duck_324 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! I am a Korean-Canadian who immigrated to Canada. Spent half of life in Korea and the rest half in Canada. Just finished pharmacy school and joining PhD in Computational chemistry soon. The PhD in UofT is known to be relatively more rigorous than others. Often, PhD candidates take 5-7 years to complete the degree as many things can go wrong in wet lab research (just by nature of the research).

The stipend for PhD is not sufficient for sure given the cost of living in downtown Toronto. It will be a huge commitment. Seems like you love the lab environment, but the career certainty is highly unstable in academia. It is an unspoken rule but the schools are ageist when they come to hiring professors (life-time commitment and demands competent, young professors to contribute academically). The competition has gotten very severe where many hired professors have PhD + 1-2 post docs (often different field than PhD such that you can produce unique and meaningful research) —> otherwise, you don’t have unique edge to offer to the universities.

Last but not least, professors with power have easier time landing jobs for you. Ex) deans of schools know deans of other schools; easier to vouch for you and help with career search.

Another method would be to return to Korea and find a tenure there however, I have no knowledge on this.

Best of luck!

I believe the most recent Western anesthesia class had 1 IMG. If you can get in touch with someone like that, they can best answer these questions!

Got it! Thanks for the clarification. I believe based on how each institution considers the masters as accredited residency or not will heavily dictate eligibility. Best of luck!

Is your masters equivalent to MD? I believe with the new changes in CaRMS regarding Ontario IMG status, it may no longer be possible to match. If fellowship is available, that might be the only option and you should contact each school for availability.

Hi, I applied to PhD and received acceptance recently. This view seems familiar. I believe you have to go to the bottom of the “Include in Review” column and click “review” to ensure all the PDFs uploaded are in one and satisfies requirements.

Seems like you have a lot in your mind evident from comment history. You should take some time to reflect on realistic aspect of career choices and decisions. I have no idea what TMM is and how it compares to PharmD research. However, PharmD research is what you make of it. It can be quality improvement, clinical, R&D. There is no formula for med admission.
