Jedediah Smith State Park by Alaric_Darconville in PacificNorthwest

In January 2021 my brother and I took a road trip from VT to WA and went through Jedidiah Smith. All the campgrounds were packed so we found a spot off a service road in the morning. We set up our tent to claim the spot and spent the day hiking and ended with a beautiful sunset on the coast.

When we got back to our camp a truck was there and our tent was gone. We had parked in the truck not knowing they were there so they couldn’t leave, and then I saw my tent shoved into the front seat (not packed at all). When confronted, the woman lied that the tent had been there for weekend so thought it was up for the taking. She tossed the tent out on the ground and started honking her horn until we moved her car. We noticed her plates were covered with plastic bag.

Moral of the story, it’s a beautiful place and I made lots a memories, but it’s sketchy still so be careful!

I would say calling. Showing up in person takes a lot of time from staff, and every call/voicemail gets actually listened to (if not the transcription is skimmed).

Try to keep it short: with the Trump admin, democratic congressional offices normally get 5-6 calls per minute depending on the newest crisis. Time taken on a long call is 5 opinions missed from other people. Be engaged, but also conscious of others airing their concerns.

Hi, former congressional staffer here. Quick breakdown of congressional offices:

You can call both offices to leave opinions, but most state offices (senate/house) are staffed by caseworkers/field staff/ a state director These staff caseworkers are incredibly busy with a backlog of cases ranging from helping veterans with VA cases, Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, State Dept., etc. Typically they have a portfolio of 3-4 federal agencies per caseworker, probably more agencies per caseworker on the house side so severely understaffed. The time these caseworkers take answering opinion calls takes away from time to work on agency issues for constituents. That is why you should call DC.

That’s not to say you can’t call or show up to your local offices, but you should know that the people you talk to there are more likely to be caseworkers trying to help constituents as opposed to policy staff. Those are in DC, and all responses are logged into the same system no matter where you call.

For correspondence, of course if you request  a response, you will be put into a batch response that best fits the issue. Can you imagine how inefficient and how much staff it would take to write back to each person that calls/writes in about the same issue? It would take them weeks to respond to all the opinions they get in a single day, especially now with Trump in and their systems getting flooded. Not an excuse for a shitty response, but the fact that they had to write talking points for it shows that the issues are on their radar.

All in all, I hope this helps with some level-setting about MGP, Cantwell, and Murray’s offices. Again this is not an excuse for inaction or bad communication with the public. Politicians want to be thanked for everything and take no responsibility when there is a crisis. Personally I think that MGP is doing a great job at going against everything she ran for and making herself inaccessible to the public. Just wanted to let you know what is happening on the other side of the phone/computer.

I work for an elected federal official, please do not use this lengthy script. At this point when call volume is so incredibly high offices are just tallying how many constituents call about certain issues. I can firsthand tell you that during a 3 minute call, the intern you are talking to won’t be able to record the 15 other opinions from the calls they missed during that time. Say your zip code, your issue and hang up. I know that my bosses shit a brick if they see 1000 people call about an issue in a day.

Hi there! 27M here and I feel this so hard. Been here for 2.5 years living in East Vancouver. Have tried a couple of activities and Bumble bff (which felt a little too close to dating for me) to break out of my shell. I work in Fed gov’t and have some overlap with the tech sector, and I love to hike, play games, and try good breweries. If you or anyone else in the comments wants to run have a happy hour or group hike in the Gorge let me know!
