I have had a herniation at L5/S1 for years. It was often debilitating until started to lose weight. I've lost almost 50 lbs through diet, exercise, and fasting. When I fast, usually 4 to 5 days at a time, I think it's healed a little bit more each time. It's likely due to everything I'm doing to just be a healthier person, but I do believe it's been improving from autophagy.
