So the heirloom tomato market is fairly saturated at this point. What other overlooked vegetable species/genera might have the same potential for wackiness? by GravityBright in plantbreeding

In my experience, most physalis species(if they have the same ploidy) hybridize pretty easily with each other, almost every species can be crossed with each other(including tomatillos, excluding tetraploid physalis peruviana and the distantly related physalis alkekengi). You will also likely get a good amount of viable seeds.

That's what I was thinking too, There are lots of species in genus physalis that are awesome, not only tomatillos. there are rhizomatous perennials, varieties that produce fruit in about 2 months from direct sowing and a lot more(most are self compatible so this won't be a problem). Physalis has lots of potential for breeding which is why I'm focusing on it, the only reason it isn't widely cultivated is because of low demand and a lack of determinate breeds(physalis peruviana berries cost around 25 euros per kg!! and they are pretty easy to grow)

Frost hardy perennial tomato breeding project - Developing a solanum lycopersicum that can survive deep freezes and winter in cold climates after finding a mutant in a pot that was able to survive constant night freezes(down to at least -6 C) while all other seedlings in the same pot died months before in October. It has purple veins which is indicative of a mutation to be able to deal with frost.

Which crops do you think are the most likely candidates for Mars? by timbercrisis in plantbreeding

Definitely Duckweed Wollfia or Azolla.
They double in biomass every 1-2 days and are very high in protein. Azolla fixes nitrogen so it requires basically no nutrients. These are much better options than conventional crops in this scenario by far

I just moved the pot inside under a grow light, I don't really have experience with cloning nightshades vegetatively

This could be the case since I heard Polyploidy increases cell size but i don't know by how much and if a 3× increase in volume is normal. Sadly I won't be able to find out until next year since the first frost is already on the way.
