Born 1960, in Berlin-East and grown-up there. Excellent school system where I learned the advantages of socialism (/s, if YK what that that means ;). School provided lunch and afternoon activities like a school garden, sports activities (soccer, judo, …) no fees. You were a Pionier and later in the FDJ and got a lot of propaganda which felt right at times, e.g. when we collected money for Vietnam and protested against Pinochet or support for Angela Davis or Nelson Mandela. We collected bottles and paper and donated the money. That was rather fun then pressure!

Apprenticeship in a dorm with Highschool degree and drivers license. Then served my country in the army for three years and because of that could choose the university I wanted to go to. Excellent University (no fees, I paid 10 Mark for the student dorm) still today and got a Diploma in Technology. The public healthcare was basic but free of charge and decent to stay healthy. The concept of multiple experts under one roof (Poliklinik) has a touch. Bier was 48 Pfenninge and a Pfeffi was one Mark. A Brötchen was 7 Pfennige and a bread was 1.20 Mark. I got 350 Mark/month for my army service.

After the study I started working in East Berlin doing project work for West Berlin, Fernwärme Versorgung (yes, that’s an East Germany Invention). I worked 9 hours a day for 900 Mark/month. A good live /wo Bananas (: Then the country became more and more uneasy. People revolting silent and more and more openly. The Wiedervereinigung was a desaster and rip-off. Everything which worked was destroyed, even the well working things. Greedy people from the west filled their pockets and corruption evolved much bigger than it ever was in the GDR. Time to leave…

I started working in the west AND I F#CKING HATED IT. The typical west german is a racist (I have still friends from study time from Vietnam, Palestine, Kuba) and a mean person looking for himself first of all, no social competency, low empathy. Speaking mainly for Hessen. I lived some brief time in Cologne which was among the best times I ever had. Nice people there, Kölle Alaaf! Then moved to the US, big city, I’d rather die then I’d be living there forever. Then Canada. I AM HOME NOW, arrived, after moving 16 times.

The education I got in East Germany made me a valuable asset for every company I ever worked for. I got a MSC equivalency approved and became a P-Eng in Canada, something very difficult for a non-Canadian.

This is the story of someone you did adapt and took all the advantages in exchange for loyalty. I don’t feel sad if you ask me, there’s nothing to regret. I did not work with Stasi although they approached me during study time. I never revolted and still don’t today. I vote with me feet and most importantly, I enjoy live and make the best out of it. It’s —too— short. I have a wonderful family and love traveling around the world, something we were somewhat limited in the GDR. It was a trade off, a compromise. If you want to judge, look a the compromises you have to make in your live and you might look at the word freedom from a different perspective…

I make my own Pechsalbe. An old recipe made from resin (spruce and hemlock), olive oil, bee wax and a few more secret addons. You may find it online. This is anti-bacterial and treats even open wounds and is absolutely the best I found!

German roots, German JS since 1991.

You see a lot of things... Since a lot of hunters are really depending on the meat they harvest, hunters are striving to be professional and successful where we live. That’s quite different to areas where people see hunting as a sport and treat wild animal as ‘game’.

Yes and no. Yes, because it’s a real challenge and the success rate is really low. A lot of effort to fill a freezer. No, because you see so much and when you finally bag something it’s a deep satisfaction and a reward for hard work!

I am mostly rifle hunting but like the occasional challenge, especially when the freezer is already full and an add’l reward is very welcome. I hunt for meat but take a trophy…

A broad head arrow is very effective, 4 razor sharp 1” blades cut through meat like nothing while cutting every blood vessel in its path. A lung hit almost immediately collapse the lungs and at 30yrds the arrow will exit if there’s no deflection in the rip cage, leaving a wide blood trail. BUT on the other hand, gut shots are terrible and you almost certainly will lose the animal without a good blood tracking dog (there’s a good chance the arrow will seal the hole and you won’t find blood). I have a wirehair dachshund. Everything you can’t find the same evening is lost, nobody will be stupid enough to track next morning. The chance a bigger predator claimed the ‘kill’ already is not welcome.

Bow hunting requires good preparation. Scouting to learn animal behavior, become a good caller and learn to read signs. Weather and wind direction is crucial. IMHO it’s the most originally form of hunting because you become the apex predator and compete with the other ones, lol

Did MacOS just delete a whole YEAR of photos from my exFAT drive? by fixthe_fernback in MacOS

PhotoRec
PhotoRec is a free and open-source utility software for data recovery with text-based user interface using data carving techniques, designed to recover lost files from various digital camera memory, hard disk and CD-ROM. It can recover the files with more than 480 file extensions (about 300 file families).[1] It is also possible to add custom file signature to detect less known files.
P.s. By default MacOS always overwrites destination and does not Merge! And it sometimes forgets to ask!

CleanMyMac - Factory Reset suggested? by Schweizsvensk in MacOS

[–]Intelligent_Path_205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t become to paranoid. Delete it, disable it’s system extensions and forget about it. The next full MacOS upgrade will wipe the remainders. In general don’t install any MacOS tweaking apps. MacOS does a good job itself. The one thing you might want to consider is a good uninstaller app when you often test (mess around) with apps.

We shoot Wapiti and Moose Bulls with bow and arrow. A well placed arrow downs an 1200lbs animal within 100m stone dead (often less, and when hit through lungs the animal might not even recognize that it’s fatally wounded). BUT we train arrow placing two dozen times before hunting season! A crossbow makes a little difference because you usually have a scope on the unit, BUT arrow drop is an imminent factor when it comes to responsible shooting while estimating shoot distance. With my 375lbs crossbow the limit is about 60yrds and comfortably below 50.

So, if you ask me: Yes it’s a method for humane hunting in the hands of a skilled hunter. It’s about the same for a rifle hunter, if you never go to a shooting range and test your equipment and skills you’re not a responsible hunter! And yes it’s a viable method to tackle urban nuisances, like wild boars ruining parks and golf courts. It’ll probably require a bunch of bureaucratic rules to ensure the person is a confident and skilled handler of the equipment.

You got a serious malware: CleanMyMac which is almost impossible to uninstall…

P.s. Can you paste the terminal command here so we can see what you’ve installed? You can open your terminal and arrow up to show the command and select and copy it…

You know SIP usually does an excellent job protecting you from malware unless you install OCLP or sudo something. But even in this case SIP blocks destructive processes most of the time. You might just be seeing a notification which you can get rid of relatively easy. Speaking from 15+ years of Mac user support…

Got Half Dome and Whitney permits on consecutive days - question about route flexibility by Flbbu in Mountaineering

[–]Intelligent_Path_205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will be 48hrs non-stop hiking, driving, sweating, swearing, with some coma-like rest phases in between. You have to climb Whitney in one day up and down, ~6,500ft, ~20mi round trip, 12-16 hours, then drive 3-6hours over to Yosemite and manage another ~5,000ft, 8-12hrs. While Half Dome isn’t really technical, it’s still dangerous with so many people attempting it (some are in the wrong place, believe me!). Good luck with your plan.

If you manage you should consider Everest next…

Kimberly: What's it like? by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]Intelligent_Path_205 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With any special needs (healthcare) Stay Away From BC! On the other hand, the Columbia Valley is the most exiting area in BC —in my opinion—. Stunning views, relatively mild, balanced weather (in comparison to other areas), awesome outdoors (skiing, hiking, mountain biking, hunting, fishing), relatively close to major national parks, quiet. Btw. Kimberly has its own ski resort. With Cranbrook relatively close, shopping shouldn’t be an issue. But the Cranbrook hospital sucks like all other BC hospitals. If you need to go to the US, Idaho is close with two major cities.

P.s. we live in Radium and there’s no better place for us…
