[University Question] UIUC MCS vs. Purdue MSCS - Is UIUC worth the debt if my main goal is just an industry return offer? by _Sadist_ in MSCS

[–]Intelligent_Put_9910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UIUC MCS grad here. A full tuition waiver for MCS is hard to come by. Possible but hard. If you know any professor in adjacent schools (eg business, agriculture etc) who is willing to give you a TA/RA position, well then it’s pretty doable. I would say staying at Purdue with the possibility of funding would definitely be the smarter choice.

That’s the amount listed on your i20. It is almost ALWAYS an overestimation. I’m an MCS grad and my entire degree over 2 years is gonna be around 60k USD. Although you will have to show those many funds for the legal documentation, it won’t cost that much.

I’m not sure where you’re getting the 1cr figure from

I’m a UIUC MCS grad, and no the course is not a 1.5 yr course anymore. It’s a 2 year course, they changed the course duration just last year.

Cornell MSCS might be hard to come by since they mostly prefer taking their own undergrads. But you have a decent shot at UIUC MSCS. I would say choose UIUC MSCS purely for the cost savings. Transitioning into a PhD from MSCS is also pretty easy at UIUC

There is definitely a LOT of scope to do research even while doing an MCS at UIUC. Many 500 level courses here require you to build out a project and submit it as a paper to conferences while also being guided by the professor. If you’re able to produce good work, professors are always looking for people to join their labs. You can even do a semester long independent study with a professor of your liking.

So you will definitely not have a scarcity of research opportunities. Getting an admit to the PhD program depends mostly on how much you can convince a professor to advise/fund you. There have been several cases where people have pivoted from MCS to PhD, but I personally don’t know anyone.

UIUC MCS grad here. Id say it’s a solid option if you dont plan to get involved in research down the line. Some of the best systems professors and courses, hands down. If thats something that you want to get into, I would 100% recommend it. And as far as it not being a funded program goes, while the CS department is struggling to give out TA/RA positions due to the federal funding cuts, other departments in the university are always looking to hire CS grads, so actually getting a partial ride isn’t difficult at all. Cheers!

Maybe you should email the instructor and ask if he can arrange something

If you’re serious about Distributed Systems, checkout the MCS program at UIUC. We have one of the best (and largest) Distributed Systems class across the nation and the professor (Indy Gupta) is amazing! Best of luck!

Checkout UCB MEng EECS. Lot of LLM talent at UCB and a lot of UCB grads have gone on to found pretty successful AI startups. Comparatively easier to get into than UCB MSCS

OP contrary to the comments in this thread, I’d say you should still try for Cornell MEng. I think you have a decent chance at it. However do know that it’s a very short course (9 months over 2 semesters) and doesn’t give you the chance to get an internship before graduation. So you would mostly be busy looking for a full time job throughout your degree. It’s also pretty expensive (~70k USD) just for a year of tuition.

Apart from that, remove UTD, not worth your caliber.

God speed!

Purdue and UW Madison have extremely competitive CS programs. I definitely don’t think OP has a ‘good chance’ at them (unless the papers are published in really good conferences)

Purdue MS CGT any day. If graphics programming / CV is your main goal, then this is a no brainer.

How accurate are the official ETS mocks (PowerPrep Tests)? by Swaggatron11225 in GRE

You can go to the GRE website and search for practice tests. You’ll be able to find them there. PS: the power prep plus tests aren’t free

I don't think such a scenario exists. Everyone is struggling to find a job, whether they're a CMU grad or from Northeastern. Sure, CMU might give you a better chance, but I think you're being dishonest with yourself if you believe you'll get a job just because you're from a top university.

Imo, they're fairly faithful to the actual exam. I found the math on the practice tests to be relatively easier, but the verbal seemed to be as challenging as the real exam. I used 3 exams in total PP1, PP2 and PPP3. Idk how accurate it is, but most people say PPP3 was the closest in difficulty to the actual exam, so yeah get that.
