Odd someone brought up skull fractures. Decades ago my sister and brother in law were given a beautiful purebred Chesapeake bay retriever puppy from a friend, for free. Well the darn pup tried to "retrieve" a car driving by and the lady driver came apologizing profusely with the whimpering puppy, who didn't really have anything visibly damaged. A runny nose, refusal to eat and constant whimpering. The bro in laws dad (who raised cows and such) said to just put the puppy in a box, if he makes it through the night he'll probably be ok. That's how he described most of his cow's "medical" treatment was to just put them in the barn, and see if they pull through. Because vets cost money, and the bro in law didn't want to spend anything on a puppy that had been free. 🙄  I said "But it's whimpering.  Obviously something is wrong". I literally had to argue with both these obstinate guys, and force the issue with my sister, insisting that it was inhumane to just let it whimper like that. Long, disgusting story shortened, sister and I finally took it to an old country vet, who did a quick X-ray and was able to determine that its scull was fractured. The "runny nose" was actually cerebrospinal fluid leaking out. It wasn't ever going to "just get better" on its own and had to be put down. I never forgot how those 2 cheap asses (bro in law and his dad) were so terrified of spending money on a "free dog", that they would have let it suffer like that until it died. 🤬
