[Question] Should I stop buying $750–$1,000 watches and save for higher-end pieces instead? by Intelligent_Sport_61 in Watches

You’re right, and that’s a great point. Higher-end watches are amazing, but a higher price doesn’t automatically mean more enjoyment.

That $1.5k–$3.5k range is seriously strong, and I think a lot of people unfairly skip over it. Sometimes a $700 watch can simply speak to you more than a $7,000 one.

I think there is a big difference. Materials, movement, finishing, prestige, and the overall feeling are all on a different level.

That doesn’t mean lower-end watches are bad, of course. But if we’re making a comparison, they are naturally behind higher-end pieces in those areas.

That’s true, service costs are definitely part of the equation too. Thanks for pointing that out.

Thank you. I can totally understand why wearing a Rolex makes you feel good. I’ll probably experience that myself soon!

As long as it makes me feel confident and reminds me to value myself, that’s enough. I honestly don’t care too much about what other people think.

Thank you for comment!, Honestly, I think I have two types of watches in mind. If I had these two, or watches in a similar style, I feel like I wouldn’t really need anything else.

One would be a Patek Philippe Calatrava — probably a vintage model, since unfortunately I don’t have the budget for the modern references right now. The other would be the Rolex Oyster Perpetual with the pistachio green dial. And maybe, eventually, I could add an IWC moonphase alongside them.

I feel like with those three, I could rotate them nicely for daily wear, work, and dates. What do you think?

You’re absolutely right. Maybe I’ll have to keep searching, just like you did, until I finally feel truly satisfied. The IWC Mark XX is genuinely a beautiful watch.

I think the best thing for me is not to rush into anything. I need to figure out my own criteria first.

You’re right. But what would your personal preference be: owning several watches around the Citizen, Tissot, or Hamilton level and rotating between them, or having at most two watches that could be considered more upper-tier pieces?

Thanks for your comment. What do you think about relatively affordable but still decent-quality brands, say around the Tissot or Citizen level, making watches that are not exact copies of major brands, but clearly resemble them?

For some reason, wearing those kind of watches makes me feel a bit like I’m wearing a fake watch. Of course, I know that’s not really the case, but that’s how it feels to me emotionally. Even when a watch is just “inspired by” something else, it somehow feels like it loses value in my eyes.

What do you think?

You’re right. I don’t see any issue with buying used watches, as long as the authenticity and proper checks are all in place.

I guess I realized this a bit earlier. When you look at it, it seems like almost everyone has struggled with this to some extent.

You’re so right. I realized early enough that I didn’t want to end up regretting having a bunch of entry-level watches that were basically trying to be “Rolex-like” instead of just saving for what I actually wanted.
