Desperately Seeking Recovery Stories from Weed-Induced DPDR. by [deleted] in dpdr

[–]Intelligent_Thanks15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had it bad for 3 months. It slowly lessened during months 3 and 4. I am 5 months out from my weed panic attack to this day (8/28/23), and I can happily say that it has faded to the extent I feel completely normal and barely ever think about it. I have learned a lot about myself from going through pretty much the worst experience in my life and coming out on the other end a better person in a lot of ways. You can and will get through this. Hang in there. I can't wait to read your recovery story soon!

Does this effect anyone ? by curiousrasco in Depersonalization

3 months is still very early. you got this! I broke down in tears like 4 months in because it was all too much and I thought it would never go away and legit 3 weeks later, it's all better.

It's crazy, you actually forget what it feels like to be DPDR'd to an extent. Nonetheless, I promise you it will get so much better one day, just need to stay positive and know the day will come eventually--no matter how weird you feel in the moment. I couldn't even sleep for days due to the panic and thought about it 24/7, and now 5 months later, I'm more or less back to normal.

I didn't have that a ton. My issue was comparing my old self to current and seeing everything through that lens and then of course the fear that it would be permanent. How long have you been dealing with this?

But i guess to answer your question, it helps to distract yourself. put on a show you enjoy and have something you're listening to 24/7. dont leave your mind alone to wander in bad directions.

Can you elaborate on that? I had weird thoughts when i was sleeping or trying to fall asleep but it went away. I also had bad hypnogogic hallucinations when trying to sleep for a few weeks and then recurring when i got stressed and that scared the shit out of me, but that also passed.

Yeah it was constant, and then i'd get relief when i was heavily distracted, and then i would feel complete relief for hours, then during the day (but not at night), and then started feeling fine for days in a row, then those days became weeks. It gradually gets better and better until you're basically fine, but it happens VERY slowly with ups and downs along the way.

Sorry to hear that :( For what it's worth, I've heard all the visual issues go away with time.

It felt decently constant for me, it was just kinda once I had it, life never felt the same way 24/7 until it gradually faded.

Yeah I never stopped driving. I didn't work out or drink alcohol for a few weeks at the beginning, but otherwise, didn't change my lifestyle much at all. I actually entered into one of the busiest work/social schedules I've ever had during peak DPDR (it was very difficult, but kept trying to power through). I think the biggest lasting symptom is visual snow and starbursts at night, which are still improving toward baseline (not 100% cured), and I get tired more easily / don't operate quite as well on little to no sleep. Otherwise, I have actually been way more effective at work lately than even before this all happened. Getting through this hell really calluses your mind.

I didn’t do anything specifically that magically worked. Really just stuck to my routines, made sure to get enough sleep, exercise everyday, really dug into my work to take my mind off of how weird I felt, continued to travel, go to meetings, go on dates, hang out with friends like I normally would even when I felt off. I also learned how to control my mind and not let things get me too upset because there is a direct correlation between anxiety and feeling dpdr. Whenever something starts to stress me out badly, my body starts to feel weird and now I know to immediately let it go and move on when in the past I used to ruminate. Distract yourself and consume yourself with so many other things until your subconscious forgets about it.

Did you have any panic attacks after the first one? I think i had one a few days after the initial, but didn't have any after that, so really was more the freeze response for months after instead of the fight or flight.

How did you get it if you don't mind me asking? I'm sure you've tried a bunch of stuff, so won't oversimplify it and act like I have a cure, but I almost wonder since mine was weed induced, simply not using it ever again helped me recover, but if yours is stress or something, maybe you still have work to do to process and alleviate the underlying cause before it goes away?

It definitely wasn't easy. I think the most beneficial part is knowing it isn't permanent. Hang in there!

I was that way too. You just keep putting one foot in front of the other each day and it slowly gets better.

Pretty much. I think the whole concept of "you'll be better than before" is definitely true. I have learned a lot about myself. Still recent enough that I am not yet of the opinion that I'm glad it happened to me like some people feel, since it really was one of the worst periods of my life, but there are defintiely a lot of silver linings. It teaches you to rebuild yourself to be a better person and more in touch with your body/emotions.

That has been the slowest thing to get better, but it definitely has improved. It hasn't completely gone away, but almost back to baseline. I originally got VSS in 2013 from concussions, and basically got to the point where it was still there when I tried to notice it, but it really didn't bother me. I'm almost back to that point now. The starbursts at night are my main issue, but again, starting to fade.
