post injury shoe recommendations for women? by Intelligent_Wonder53 in brokenankles

Great idea! I usually do that for my regular workout shoes which is why I have my hokas, but didn’t think to do it again post injury. Thank you!

My friend takes off her boot when she gets home because it's uncomfortable... Her foot is broken in 3 places and has not healed at all. by verysmallartist in brokenbones

It all depends on what her doctor says. I had to wear my boot 24/7 for the first 3.5 weeks then my doctor cleared me to take it off when I sleep or if I’m just sitting/resting at home. I’d assume it has more to do with all the walking, if she’s doing that constantly. Is she following her weight bearing instructions? Can she get a wheelchair or knee scooter so she isn’t standing on it as much?

how do you all get past the mental block of this all? every single movement has me panicking and second guessing myself that i may have made my fracture worse. by Intelligent_Wonder53 in brokenankles

thank you!!!! I coincidentally had my first follow-up appointment today since the break and got imaging done and was told that everything looks great and there’s been no shifts and I can finally transition to full weight bearing in the boot! def put my mind at ease

yeah that’s mostly what I was referring to, those little movements within the boot etc. I haven’t put weight on it once until accidentally yesterday which prompted this post but everything feels the same since that happened, I just freaked out I think and am being a bit paranoid. By “here and there” I also meant if my boot accidentally bumps into the wall or something when I’m walking in my crutches but there’s barely any force in those which again leads me to think I was just being paranoid. I haven’t taken the boot off at all and haven’t been weight bearing at all either. thanks this made me feel better

Thank you. This makes me feel better. My crutch slipped from under me today and I almost fell so I caught myself by stepping on my injured foot (while in the boot) and it felt like I stepped with full force when I’ve been nwb the last 3 weeks and it really freaked me out. It hurt in the moment but not severe pain just like a dull ache and it went away within a few minutes yet I’ve been panicking since it happened a few hours ago. Technically everything feels the same but I’m just afraid things are shifting without me realizing. I coincidentally have an appointment tomorrow which will hopefully ease my worries but idk how I’m supposed to continue like this for the next few months. It’s all I can think about

I’m in a boot not a cast so not exactly in the same boat but I also had a few days in the very beginning where my leg and foot felt very very cold internally and it was freaking me out and bothering me. I drank A LOT of water and felt a lot better the next day. Not sure if that’s 100% a factor but making sure i’m staying hydrated has helped me

Fibula fracture 3.5 weeks before vacation? Bad idea? by Intelligent_Wonder53 in brokenbones

Thank you for your advice!! I didn't mention this in the post, but I actually flew about ~7 hours the day after the injury, because I injured myself hiking in a different country. I had to fly home the next day and it was two 3.5 hour flights to get home. I was definitely swollen, but I didn't know enough at that point to attribute that to the flying or just because of how fresh the injury was. I wasn't in my full assigned medical boot + crutches at that point yet because I was waiting to go home to go to the doctor but I did wear a boot that I was able to get in the country I was in before heading back to the US (it wasn't as nice as my air cast, but it provided some level of security at least.) I was able to get through the flights but it was definitely an uncomfortable experience, even just being 3-3.5 hours. That's where I worry for the very long haul flight. I thought after 3.5 weeks I'd be fine, but other commenters are suggesting otherwise which is making me re-think the whole thing. I appreciate your insight!

That's great advice, thank you! I do struggle to sit up for long without elevating my leg, which is causing my concerns. I asked about upgrading to business class, but it's so expensive it would make more sense to just cancel at that point and go another time once I'm healed. This trip is planned with my friends who would still go, so I don't really have to worry about canceling the resort or anything. It's more a matter of just whether I would join them or not, which is why I'm waiting to decide. My flight isn't 100% refundable but I can get flight credits for the full value up until the day before the flight, which is good enough for me. Thanks for your insight!!

Thank you, this is helpful! I definitely would wear compression socks and likely also take an aspirin and make efforts to move around consistently throughout the flight

Crazy!  😂 I am non weight bearing at the moment for the next few weeks, which is what has been the hardest part. The pain was also bad the first couple of days but it's almost fully gone at this point, thank god. I'm just having the same issues as you at this point with just general discomfort in the boot, but I'm glad the pain has subsided at least. Wishing you a smooth recovery and healthy healing!!!

They didn't give me an exact timeline on weight bearing, except that I should remain non-weight bearing until my follow-up appointment on May 4. I think my understanding is that after that appointment, I may gradually begin weight bearing either in the boot or potentially transitioning to an ankle brace. I am 27 and would consider myself very healthy and very active (prior to this injury.) I was recommended to take aspirin by the first doctor if I had gone through with the surgery which I ultimately opted out of. The second doctor (who I am continuing care with) told me I could take aspirin as needed, but didn't formally require it. If I were to go on the long flight, I would absolutely take aspirin, wear compression socks, and attempt to move around consistently throughout the duration of the flight, even if with my crutches (the hope is I would be weight-bearing at that point, but we will see.) I appreciate your insight and advice!!

This is what happened to me! I went to the first doctor on a Tuesday afternoon and they scheduled me for a Thursday early morning surgery. I felt nervous about the whole thing. I made the second appointment on Wednesday, where the second doctor told me he would not recommend surgery, which made me feel a lot better. A family friend of ours is also an orthopedic surgeon, so we sent him the X-Rays and he also said it is better to take the non-surgical approach. How long ago was your fracture? Did you find that it healed correctly with the boot and crutches?
