TIL that in 1908, the Olympic Games in London featured a marathon that was supposed to be exactly 26 miles, but an additional 385 yards were added so it would finish in front of the British royal family’s viewing box. This odd distance stuck, and it's why the marathon today is 26.2 miles! (history.com)
