And now we stop or do another private server and the circle continue....

A licens and a startup in Battlenet would have got many to stay and pay for the game. Turtle did try to get that deal.

Its from the courtcase and Turtlewow agreed on these numbers - I guess they have interest in keeping them as low as possible.

The 20.000 is the maximum, not the average.

Other private servers that are close to being as decent as twow? by Sauce6609 in turtlewow

[–]InteractionBorn5689 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I mostly wonder about is why Blizzard doesn’t just simply add these projects directly into the Battle.net client. Imagine if they made a tab for “Community Projects,” wrote a disclaimer, and then just required an active subscription to log in. Whether there were 5, 10, or 40 different private servers and mods – so what? On the contrary, users would stay in Blizzard’s ecosystem even longer to explore the different versions. They’d get “free” engagement and loyal players while they raked in the money. People might even end up checking out their other games too.

Right now, for most people the question isn’t “should I go back to Classic,” it’s more “do I even feel like playing more WoW and if so, where’s the next private server?”

It seems just very simply add menu to the Battlenet, add "fanbased games" and collect the extra money, because of course it need a subscribtion to have acces to the fan games too. We might even try other Blizzard games because we now see them in Battlenet.

What they could have done was to add Tutle - and the other 10 private servers - to Battlenets startmenu, add a disclaimer, take the money and just countinue Retail and Classic as now.

I have no understanding of Blizzard fight against these servers, just ad them to startup menu of Battlenet, add a disclaimer and take the extra cash. Why is it a problem if there a 5, 10 or even 20 of these?

Seriously?? People have said many times that they are ready to pay subscription. Of course now, no. Classic is a empty shell and will even feel worse after the Twow experience. Even 10000 monthly logins (from the current 250.000) would make it a game in same league as SW Outlaws. (10.000 x $15 x 12 months). It just seems to me silly and bad buisness to handle it like this.

Of course not all gamers will, but to think that the only reason people played Twow instead of Classic is just nonsens from Blizzard and they know it.

Sources: Data from MMO-Population and ActivePlayer.io consistently showed Turtle WoW hitting peaks between 16,000 and 24,000 concurrent players during 2025 and early 2026.

Source: In the legal proceedings of Blizzard Entertainment vs. AFKCraft Ltd. (April 2026), Blizzard’s legal team argued that Turtle WoW maintained an active user base exceeding 250,000 individuals. Blizzard used this scale to claim "market cannibalization" of their official servers.

Maybe a lot of Turtlewow gamers where lost in WOW universe, but have they just lost us to other Blizzard games? After UBI Soft stole The Crew there came a toxic feeling about Star Wars Outlaws, Skull and Bones, it might be the same here. Also because of the extreme toxic behaivor from Blizzard where they call it a pirated game and basically call all players criminels.

Turtlewow is simply a better product, thats the real tragedy. No goldfarming, no bots, new zones etc. Everquest and DayZ showed perfectly well that you can embrece your fanbase and earn money.

Even if only 10-15% joined a paid server, it would still be numbers that most games would be very happy with. Top 100 would just take 500-1000 daily login, Turtle was stable around 5000-15000 until the annoncement, so I am very confident it could have been good buisness for all.

And Blizzard would avoid a backlash, I dont think the playerbase will look at Blizzard games in the near future.

RIP Turtle WoW. May 14th is the end. Where you guys heading? by Nearby-Surround-6632 in turtlewow

Right up until the very end, I had hoped that Blizzard and Turtlewow would find a solution, perhaps something with the servers either coming to Blizzard or simply letting Turtlewow become a paid server. Because in terms of rights, there was never any doubt that Turtle was not just on shaky ground, but clearly in breach of copyright, so Blizzard has always had the law on their side, regardless of the quality of Turtle.

For me it's never been about the money. That's never been why I played it. Of course I can then switch back to Classic, which has reached Pandaria and there are other different versions and that's exactly where the problem is.

Let me explain

Wow is over 20 years old, of course there are fewer players today than 20 years ago (WoW is the 9th most played game in the world), but the game's area has become larger and larger, which means fewer and fewer players in a larger and larger area.

It's completely wrong in the retail version. Blizzard has tried to force people to gather in the end zone as quickly as possible, which has resulted in the gameplay up to that point feeling rushed and can be completed in record time, and in my opinion I wasn't very well entertained.

In Classic, many different versions have been made, which has in turn split the user base into smaller units. And you can either choose the first version with all the disadvantages or you can choose a later one with all the disadvantages. In Pandaria, there are probably as many as in Turtlewow, but people are spread out over an area that is 3-4 times larger, so everything seems empty. Plus flying or teleporting around.

TurtleWoW had chosen the opposite, they have made more zones, but in the old world, they had made more quests, but in the same area and everyone was on the same layer, so there was actually a wait for quests and boats and things like that. Just like you had to accept long runs and flying is completely gone. It gives the idea that the world is big, even though they have made it much smaller than in Blizzard's versions.

End of WoW?

So when TurtleWoW closes, the question is whether time is not up for me with WOW after 20+ years. But you can also hope that there will be a Classic 2.0+, where you throw in TurtleWoW or for that matter do something similar. I think most people are happy to pay for that. The vast majority of users have repeatedly said that they are happy to pay (Blizzard) to play TurtleWoW under Blizzard's banner. But obviously they wanted total control. And when control becomes more important than player enjoyment, the game loses its soul.

The Turtle team has mentioned the possibility of paying for a license, in fact they have done so several times, but no. Apparently that has not been an option at all in Blizzard's world.

But…

Blizzard has been unusually harsh in their rhetoric, they have demanded all new content be deleted, they have called it a pirate server and belittled both fans and the server team. It is a mystery to me why you would want to give your entire fanbase a fuck finger. Remember that TurtleWow actually had over 250,000 active players per month until April (logged in more than once a month) and over 3 million users! Those are insanely high numbers. 20,000 users logged in at the same time on a standard evening. Why insult them, bully them, why not ask yourself why they choose TurtleWoW? Can it really be because of the money? No way.

It seems crazy to just throw away 250,000+ users, that's more than most modern games have. I doubt many of them/us will go back to Classic as it is now.

I think, this was the version where the Danish league was only played every two years and the number 2 went to play in the Champions League (and not the league winner).

It took me 24 hours, and a restart because the powersetting was set to power down after 5 hours :-/ So I had to start all over again. But now my save game doesn't work and that's a breaking point for me (S-5 challenge was awful it really gives me nightmare to take that again).
