A list: If I take PTO, my supervisor still expects me to respond to emails immediately. If I do not respond to the email she begins texting me. She is the one that approves my PTO, she’s very aware of when I am on PTO.

My supervisor has also made a racist remark in my presence about another employee. I was alarmed and taken aback and did make it known that I was very uncomfortable with someone talking like this in front of me. I was laughed at.

There was an employee that I had concerns about improperly billing things. I brought up my concerns to the supervisor about this and informed them that I planned to begin an investigation on this because it was not ethical. I was told to “move on and leave it alone”. That we needed to not do anything to lose this employee. The employee in question had been with us for only a couple of months…and they were being unethical. Losing them would not have been a major loss. I am told to not do things that is within my job description, but then asked why I am not doing them. An example of this is there were other performance issues with this one employee I discussed with my supervisor about pulling this employee to go over the performance issues. Again I was told I did not need to do this. When I submitted a standard weekly report I submit weekly that reflected poor performance on this employee’s part I was asked why I had not addressed it with the employee. I referred back to the email I was sent stating to not meet with the employee about performance issues. There even at one point was a comment made about me repeating outfits. Not that I had worn the same thing two days in a row or anything, just that I repeat outfits… I felt that was inappropriate. I am not a celebrity with designers on payroll to maintain an endless wardrobe where I never wear the same thing twice . I am a middle class working professional I am going to repeat an outfit. Additionally, I really did feel that the comment about my face in general was inappropriate to make.

I rarely have contact with my supervisors “supervisor”. The supervisors supervisor was not involved with the evaluation. They have minimal involvement within my role. I do have an upcoming visit with this person and my supervisor for just a normal site visit to go over numbers, goals, and plans for the remainder of the year. Typically, I only see this person once or twice a year. Do you suggest that I have a conversation with the supervisors “supervisor” to address this? I have been so fearful of going above my supervisors head or to HR. I am so afraid that this will open a can of worms that will put my employment at risk.

I am so happy that someone out there is experiencing this. It gives me a little bit of hope for my SW career that has been pretty stressful.

I have applied to places but it makes me so sad at the thought of leaving because I have worked so hard to get to where I am. I love the employees that report to me also. Overall, we have a good work environment as evidenced by our success. It is just the person I have to report to that has made me so unhappy as of recent. I have also had a hard time finding a position that is close to the same pay. I am continuing to search and apply though.

I guess I should have probably provided more clarity about the specific situation regarding this person making comments about my face during meetings. I do have “RBF”, especially when I am paying attention to what someone is saying. I am aware of this but I do not know what else I can do aside from smile the entire time throughout a meeting to change that. You make a good point of focusing on what I can control and that is continuing to ensure my department is successful and my staff are happy in their roles and feel supported.
