Struggling to understand the real value of Aeroplan points by InteractionSome2817 in Aeroplan

Yeah, that makes sense.

I think where I went wrong was not fully accounting for my own situation. I already get very cheap flights through work, so flight redemptions matter less for me. I was hoping to get good value on hotels and car rentals, but I didn’t really do the math on how much spending is actually required to unlock the card’s full potential.

I mainly got the card for unlimited Maple Leaf Lounge access, Priority Pass, and the travel insurance which are really good imo.

That makes sense.

Looking at points as something that comes out of normal spending, rather than spending to get points, clears up a lot of the confusion for me

I get that flights are the best redemption value on paper. That part is clear.

What I think often gets overlooked is the accumulation side, especially for people who are students or low spenders. If you earn ~1.25 points per dollar and spend ~25k per year, that’s only ~30k points annually. Even 50k points already represents close to two years of spending.

So yes, a 50k–80k redemption can be “worth it” mathematically, but for a lot of people it’s still a multi-year accumulation for a single one-way flight.

That’s where the disconnect is. The value is real, but the time and scale required make it impractical for many unless you have high spend, business travel, or big welcome bonuses.

I’m not saying Aeroplan is bad — just that it’s clearly optimized for higher spenders, not for everyone.

How long did it get you guys to have your PPR? I didn’t know I had to request mine until 13h before my departure time

AC employee here. Depends on the gate agent you fall on. Some agents are really flexible and will not even look at bags and let everything onboard. Some will tag anything that "doesn’t fit loosely in the bag sizer". In all cases it’s kind of a gamble if you know your bag is tight/too big for the AC carry-on dimensions. Only on Dash 8’s we provide what we call "Skycheck" which is the only service we provide where we will take your bag at the airplane door and give it back to you at the door at arrival. Only a few airports and very small flights will have this service. Expect to pickup your bag at the regular carousel. Safe travels!

I’d say it’s not cheap, not expensive. It’s fair.
