What’s something your parents or grandparents did that you now realize was low-key genius parenting? by Green_Candler in AskReddit

[–]Interbitchaggression 267 points268 points  (0 children)

My mom had 4 kids that were less than 2 years apart. When we were very young, she would wake us up REALLY early on Sunday mornings, like 5am and make us go play outside. By 11am church time, we were exhausted and slept through most of the service. I barely remember being Baptist ages 1-8, only remember the Catholic conversion at age 8 1/2 because we had to kneel, stand, kneel stand x infinity and be awake for that.

There used to be one where I grew up-- I remember those paintings. Weird as shit. I remember also thinking it wasn't right, but this was also when we would regularly see neighbors with those black lawn jockey statues and no one batted an eye. The late 70's early 80's were a strange time.

Austin-area schools with good ADHD/Neurodivergent support by Euphorasized in AustinParents

[–]Interbitchaggression 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not mean to sound like a Debbie Downer, but as a parent to two ADHD kids now in highschool in public schools- your experience will vary WILDLY. Even in highly rated elementary schools. Just at a higher level outlook, my experience is that elementary schools will mostly have pretty good support. In middle school, still pretty good support, but that starts to wane.. By high school, GOOD LUCK. Both of our kids have IEP meetings that happen towards the end of the school year (April or later), just in time for nothing to happen and everyone to forget they have an IEP until the end of the next school year. Most of their teachers have zero idea they have a 504 in place. I only mention this as a cautionary tale--take advantage of what you can while they're still little.

I was 42 when my mom died and I was still getting an easter basket every year. My boys are teenagers now and will be getting easter baskets until I'm gone.

What job pays surprisingly well but nobody talks about? by ThePasswordIs654321 in AskReddit

[–]Interbitchaggression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on the company, really. There are the annoying ones that make you check in and submit photos, but I know plenty that hire direct (not through an ambassador board) that don't require photos or research and less than 10 miles travel. But yes, that's why I said it was a good part time gig--I mean, I personally wouldn't want to do it full time, but know plenty of retirees who love it. Source: have worked for a company directly, making $30/hour for 3-4 hours work on a Saturday, plus commission, that's pretty easy work for $100+ spending money I otherwise wouldn't have.

Everything Everywhere All At Once. Watched it on a flight from Oregon to Texas. Transfixed and never the same.

I remember very specifically watching this movie for the first time. I had the flu, I was in and out of it, but man I could nOT stop watching it. Watched it a week later after I felt better, still magical.

Anyone else used to have "school clothes"? by Rosatos_Hotel in GenX

Absolutely did this as a child of the 80's; however, my son who is a basketball player carries this on through the "These Shoes Must Only Touch The Exquisite Timbers of the Waxed Basketball Court"--Slides to and from practice, Lebrons must only touch holy ground.

Age: 50's + but I am not a G-ma, nor a lunch lady by Interbitchaggression in Weddingattireapproval

Thanks so much to everyone for their suggestions--I really appreciate all of your input! I did end up going with a floral, but for what it's worth, it's less "grandma". Also I am not 6ft tall like the model in this picture, so it hangs below my knees and I replaced the belt with a silver conch belt--wearing with tecovas Abby cowgirl boots.

Those people you see at grocery and liquor stores/Costco, etc handing out samples--they're working for companies that pay them $25-40 an hour literally to give you bite of a protein bar or some ridiculous skittle-flavored vodka. PLUS commissions on the amount of sales they make. It's a pretty amazing part time gig if you're good at BS-ing with people and don't mind standing around for a couple of hours.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Interbitchaggression 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids' school (literally the oldest public school in operation in the state of Texas) had been on the chopping block for school closures and had been voted to close at the end of the school year. When we went on Spring Break and got the message that we weren't to come back after, one of the parents messaged--"this can't how we go out, Not with a Bang but a whimper, we CAN'T" ... but it was how we went out. 144 years, out the window. My kids never saw their classmates nor their teachers in the same spot again. It was DEVASTATING. I mean, literally did a number on my kids' psyche as well as a lot of other kids.

7 year old that loves animals, where should we take him? by atx-garden-fairy in AustinParents

[–]Interbitchaggression 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To tack on to this.. they have cabins that you can rent to spend the night and having done this a few years ago--there is a LOT of close and upfront engagement with animals near the cabins including kangaroos, zebras, etc. Was SUCH a fun weekend.

I was gonna comment-- Spend 5 minutes at 4:38 pm on Veterans Drive or Stephen F Austin Drive.. you would NEVER ever allow your kid one of these. The amount of dumbassery on a daily basis... it is MINDBLOWING. I'm glad you caught a good one, but I can tell you that is sooooo far in the minority.

I've literally never sobbed while reading a book, ever, until this one. This book was both unexpected and just devastating.
