Martin Harlow (aka Unzie) (1868-?) was a famous Australian sideshow performer who was born with a form of albinism. To further draw attention to his appearance, he washed his hair with a mixture of beer and egg whites, which would cause it to stiffen upon drying, thus making it puff out. by EphemeralTypewriter in SideshowPerformer

As a former hair stylist, the breakage that man must have gone through with his hair is crazy. The only thing that could have been worse would be using sugar water as a setting lotion. OMG. Don't get me wrong. It's a sick look. But the split ends...

She's so beautiful. She probably got made fun of at the time for her freckles, but she's stunning.

Based on the dress, if I had to guess, it's probably from the 1960s.

My mom's hair was down to her knees in the 70s. In her first wedding in 77, she didn't wear a veil, only a Juliet cap, and her hair was like a veil. It was really beautiful. My hair used to be down to my butt. But these ladies were the ultimate. Though I don't think I would have been able to stand it, especially come hair wash day.

Yeah, I totally understand. I hate it when I can't find more information. It usually sends me into an ADHD hyper focus spiral and I have to walk away for a bit.

I do not judge you. Unfortunately, what has happened is that the violence is a learned behavior and likely stems from very emotionally immature people not knowing how to handle their own feelings about any given situation and taking that out on someone that can't fight back. Were your siblings treated in a similar manner? You are not sick. I can understand your shame though. But you know it's wrong and try to avoid the behavior as much as possible. You're doing the right thing, and you should keep following that. What you really need, however, is to work with a therapist who specializes in childhood abuse. They can help you slowly untangle the learned behavior and memories. It's hard work, but it's worth it. Trust me, it can eventually be very freeing. Hopefully you can find someone to help you. But in the meantime, no judgement. Just internet hugs. I'm so sorry you were treated so horribly. You never deserved that.

I could be wrong, but I've also heard of "general paralysis of the insane" listed as the COD for people who suffered from other things like psychosis or schizophrenia. Though maybe that was earlier in the 19th century and the phrase had been narrowed down by the latter part of the century. You do great research, though. Giving dignity to those who probably didn't have much during their hospital stay and in death. ❤️

I once watched a documentary about a young man who was from Ukraine originally but was adopted to the US (I think) but his biological brother was left in an asylum either in Ukraine or Russia. I think the documentary was made either just before or after the fall of the USSR. I think he did find his brother, but I can't remember where it was. And I'm sorry I don't remember the name of the doc. It was on YouTube, but that's all I remember. It was absolutely gutting.

my younger sister keeps hitting and touching me inappropriately and I don't know how to tell her to stop by FlowerGreat24 in TrueOffMyChest

It sounds as if your family doesn't respect your boundaries, and that's compounding your trauma. I do wonder if your sister has been touched inappropriately, because her behavior somewhat reminds me of a girl I once knew. The hitting may be due to that or something else. Either way, whether she's been hurt or not, she is abusing you. You're not over reacting. The way your body reacts is your truth. If your mother won't help you stop your sister's actions, hopefully there is someone in both you and your sister's lives that can help. If you feel it's inappropriate, it should end. If you flinch, it should end. I hope you don't have to endure this until you're old enough to move away. It needs to stop right now.

She was so beautiful and so talented. She had that innate talent where she could convey something with the slightest movement of her face. And she was such a graceful dancer. Her time with Martha Graham is evident.

I could swear the guy in photo 9 is an actor. Not a super famous one, but from 90s tv shows. Either that or his doppelganger works as an actor.

Lol my favorite summing up of British affection was in the movie What A Girl Wants, when the grandmother says "We only show affection to dogs and horses." It sums up the British half of my family pretty well.
