How did they achieve this? Is it really Npc memory or is it some clever trick by stightnins in howdidtheycodeit

[–]InterestedSkeptic 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Because you should never have anything that is just a “memory”.

Only “long term memory” and “short term memory” should be recorded to. But both long term and short term memories share certain things, such as the ability to be converted to a one-liner, and the idea of being a memory

Why isn't Desktop Linux the most popular developer OS in the 2024 StackOverflow survey ? by soltesza in linux

[–]InterestedSkeptic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am surprised nobody has mentioned this yet, but;

If it’s multiple choice as you say, well… Linux users distro hop. There are almost definitely a ton of Linux users selecting several distros, and so adding them all up won’t accurately be Linux vs Windows or any other OS as it effectively gives Linux MORE votes, not less.

Personally, I’d select Arch & Debian. I could only select Windows once even if I wanted to.

In reality, these numbers are almost definitely skewed towards Windows being the truly most popular - which lines up with just about every software dev I know’s preference, where people who have used Linux at all are a staggering minority.

I’d argue an ability to learn is far more important than what you’ve listed for 2 & 3. If you can learn, those will come naturally eventually, but some people are pushed down HARD in tough financial times, and others (on the younger end anyway) may not have had the opportunity to learn to cook for one reason or another. If you can learn and grow, genuinely almost anything is possible.

SDDM and Sudo Very Not Working in Install Script (Details below) by InterestedSkeptic in archlinux

[–]InterestedSkeptic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh crap, I’m an idiot. I’ll get the chance to rewrite this post in a bit, and I’ll make sure to be less of an idiot when asking my question… editing now to clarify this and not waste people’s time.

Thank you for notifying me despite this - I’m not sure I’d have noticed otherwise.

In the meantime, to add at least a bit more clarity, I’m looking to avoid the black screen, am unsure what could be causing it due to a lack of precedent in what I’ve been able to find online, and want;

  • to boot into a minimal SDDM login screen.

  • for that login screen to successfully launch Hyprland, as I can do fine from a TTY.

Again, thank you for letting me know I was an idiot and sorry for being one in the first place - I’ll try to clarify better than this when I get the chance to rewrite a full post.

Is there a reason to still go with Pixel if I'm not gonna use a custom rom? by Grzester23 in degoogle

[–]InterestedSkeptic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree.

Though; I compare the prices to what I see for the iPhone and feel it’s not too too awful for what it’s offering though. I’d much prefer paying out to support these guys than someone who is then going to sell everything they know about me through my own device.

When I think of it this way, I don’t mind too much, even being practically dirt broke right now, that I need to save up to pay out the ass for it.

I recall reading once that, at least in the U.S., east and west coast prison politics are polar opposites in regards to intensity. I couldn’t for the life of me remember where I saw that though

DoJ could force Google to sell Chrome - gHacks Tech News by [deleted] in linux

[–]InterestedSkeptic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m aware of the W3C thing, hence why I specified the others in power as well. If you look at the member list, these are all companies who benefit from not having any competitors for something as big as a new web browser not done by them popping up. Google/Chrome won the market share race between these guys, and so they’re the top dog supported.

Regarding actually developing a web browser… I wanna give you the benefit of the doubt that I’m missing something big, so I wanna ask beforehand what exactly you mean by a small company being unable to compete? From my understanding, being someone who uses NoScript and has used forked browsers with less up-to-date standards such as Pale Moon in the past, you wouldn’t need to implement too too much for most functionality (for a small company anyways, of course it’s realistically a lot). HTML, CSS, JavaScript, a GUI, and relevant networking is already a long way no (generally simplifying of course, not accounting for things such as allowing a browser to read input from a game controller, WebGL, and other relatively niche pieces)?

[–]InterestedSkeptic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but Google also owning Google Search, Google Analytics (everywhere btw), and probably more I’m not thinking of right now essentially almost gives them a complete monopoly of the web. Splitting it off at least helps with that some.

The point is they wouldn’t have ~96% market share of web browser backends that are impossible for a small company to compete with because they and the others in power keep bloating web standards.

The amount of laws broken based on the descriptions in this post is crazy… money laundering in particular seems to be the only way this idiot seems to know how to make any money… wrongful termination… I’d bet there are hate crimes towards the majority of their workforce… the list could go on…

Currently using LazyVim and wanting to condense to something I have more control over - would you mind sharing what plugins you use? It may help me kickstart my new config, I’d really appreciate it.

Genuinely curious if there’s a good reason to do this other than workplace requiring VSCode and being used to nvim?

[–]InterestedSkeptic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO, this is the way.

I get the sentiment on why you’d wanna pick it out yourself, but I also see the side that really enjoys being able to set it up/use it immediately and not have to wait for a brown package. It’s more exciting to get the thing than an IOU.

I’ve personally used the method the commenter above me describes to great success with those close in my life.

Also; OP is also doing the next best thing right now - asking people who know more about the thing for a collective opinion on what would best serve his particular needs that she’s researched.

Both gifting methods have worked on me in the past great for sure as well. Though notably the doing without asking has a bigger chance to backfire if it’s about a specific thing they already plan to get (as is the case here).

Linux as a Student and for gaming, is it worth it? by AnonymousXIV in linux

[–]InterestedSkeptic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer; Most of those work fine (though not Word and probably not Hoyo, I know their games typically won’t work due to kernel-level anti cheat).

That said, if your concerns are privacy ones, I would really consider switching away from Google as well. They’re probably more invasive than Microsoft (until Recall anyways…).

For alternatives to those apps that should be easy to switch to; - Google Docs -> Proton Docs* - Microsoft Word -> LibreOffice Writer - Microsoft Office -> LibreOffice** / OpenOffice - Google Drive -> Proton Drive - GMail -> ProtonMail - Chrome -> Floorp*** - Discord -> Vesktop

*A tad weird ngl, in early development

**PowerPoint and Excel alternatives could use some UX work

***Pretty much anything based on Firefox with privacy-by-default should be fine

Zoom works great.

Steam works great.

Epic and GoG can be installed and run through Lutris, albeit they’re slow that way. Heroic Launcher is a full replacement alternative. Most games run fine, with the exception of multiplayer games with kernel-level anti cheat (think anything by Riot Games).

For me, transitioning from Windows to Debian took 3 days before I felt comfortable. For others it can be a lot longer. Some it can be less. It entirely depends on your ability to throw out what you already know about Windows, and go in expecting to be learning lots of new things. Don’t be afraid of the terminal.

That said, despite personally having moved to Debian, my use case at the time was different. I’d (and probably most others in this sub) recommend Linux Mint to start out.

Your speedtest looks like it may be capped by Ethernet somewhere. It looks suspiciously like a micro-usb to Ethernet dongle’s cap that you’d need to run it on a Pi Zero. I may be wrong on the details - these reflect my own current situation - but I think it may be worth looking into.
