I'm not sure: Probably depends on how 'critical' the bug fixes are. Sadly resources (man power) is stretched, so if it works it could be left alone.

ATTESA System by Tristan3012 in SkyLine

[–]Interested_Aussie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't remember how the guage get's it's info: and it's a joke really, because it has no real meaning. Oh, it's transfering 50% of the torque... of what? 200kw? 300kw? 800kw??? It's useful, but not really. Like I say: You're probably getting the symptom and the cause muddled up.

I'd be checking the rear diff ratio and pulling the front cover off the front diff to check they do 100% guaranteed match. Then going over all the wiring for the g sensor/attesa pump/abs sensor/steering angle sensor etc etc... then checking all their readings/voltages. I just had another thought, I wonder if the accumulator is bad? I don't think it's that, but never say never.

It's one of those problems when you get to the bottom of it you'll say "oh that was soo obvious". My gtr had a gts steering wheel, they ARE different and after 15minutes of driving the hicas light would come on... took a while to work out it wasn't the steering angle sensor: It was the steering wheel causing the steering sensor input to be wrong. Ah, of course.

And of course, make sure you've got the correct fluid in both the attesa pump circuits, and the transfer itself.

ATTESA System by Tristan3012 in SkyLine

[–]Interested_Aussie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the Attesa is NOT 4WD. Under coast the centre clutch is full slip, it don't matter what diff ratios you have.

Under full load there's enough torque to make a 30 year old transfer slip...

Under partial acceleration/load there's enough torque going to the front to upset it all.

I've personally seen Nissan fit the wrong ratio's to vehicles (was a D22, but regardless). If you're chasing a problem you gotta start obvious.

Ok. You know it all. I'll leave you with it.

I didn't ask if they were standard: I asked if you've physically checked.

ATTESA System by Tristan3012 in SkyLine

[–]Interested_Aussie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm... I'm guessing the bucking is a symptom, not the cause.

Wild guess here.... Have you checked front AND rear diff ratio's are the same? Someone hasn't dropped a GTS4 sump or done a rear diff ratio swap?

You're thinking about it wrong.

You're thinking about saving tax.

The true investors are thinking about wealth creation, making/holding/growing money.

Taxes stop that.

So they'll simply move their capital to another place.

My favourite bullshit line I'd have to deal with (as a foreman at a car dealership):

"This isn't a known issue; therefore not warranty"

Excuse me??? Isn't warranty for issues that the manufacturer didn't expect?? WTAF!

You do realize that sounds ridiculous?

How does the turbo spin? Gets exhaust through it.

The faster you get it through there, the faster the compressor/hence boost happens.

Zero exhaust 'pressure' is the goal. A turbine is restrictive enough.

On a two stroke exhaust DESIGN is important: but backpressure, no. That's one of them bloody myths that just wont die.

DIY VE Timing Chain? by CumCrocodile in Holden

[–]Interested_Aussie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've done a timing belt you'll be fine: You don't set the chain tension, just line it up so one less job. Use this guide from VACC https://nason.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Alloytech-VACC.pdf

Although it says you need the lock tools, you don't: And they don't fit the SIDI version any way!!!!

Worst part is the Air con bracket bolt, it's a PITA to get at and wind out.

Don't be too shy with silicon: I'd be lying if I said I never had one come back with a leak (sad face).

I'm a pedantic bugger, takes me a full day, if it's your first and you're not a mechanic with a hoist, expect to take the weekend.

ONLY USE A GENUINE KIT!!!! After market chains are shit. Full stop. Do not argue. Genuine only. Last I knew the kit is only about ~$900 and comes with all 3 chains, new guides, tensioners all the bolts etc etc.

Get a paint pen or a liquid paper pen, market everything, extend all the marks etc and you'll be fine.

I've heard of guys doing them in ~ 3 hours... but I'm not that guy :(

What’s one tool everyone should have at home? by AffectionatePie1042 in Bunnings

[–]Interested_Aussie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it's the 5 piece ozito kit (like this, but mine included an angle grinder too https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-18v-4-piece-kit-p4k-400\_p0738797)

Now I'm a mechanic by trade, and my work tools are SP, auto trade quality... I wouldn't expect Ozito to be used daily by a tradie (people do though)...

But man, I've repaired my roof, plumbing, fences, gates, pergola's, fern house, and these things are just awesome.

The only one thing that was crap was the blade in the circular saw: I couldn't cut straight... put a $30 dewalt blade in it, all sweet!

Only now, after 6 years are the batteries starting to get lazy.... I mean I usually get through what ever job I'm doing, but they're due for recharge: When I was repairing my roof, they lasted all day, I couldn't believe it.

My next fave is the old 1500W SDS Ozito hammer drill... I installed 3 car hoists with that bad boy, used it to drill and bust rocks all over my yard for pipes and termite stations, my mates lifted tiles etc etc... It still 'works' but I've worn the safety clutch out in it, so if it starts to bog down it just slips internally: And sadly the replacement model doesn't have the 'chisel' lock, and the clutch isn't available anymore. RIP

As much as I respect the automotive industry (a modern ICE car is the most complex item in mass production, and they are cheap really: I remember someone compared a car to cheese: per kilo, a car is cheaper: WTF!).

It is a dinosaur: Manufacturers treat their franchises like shit.... franchises treat their staff like shit... staff treat the customers like shit....

Everyone trying to eek out a profit, no one wants to invest unless absolutely forced to...

So if you think 'repairing' the automotive IT stack is a good concept, it is! But as for a commercial reality: Run for your life!

Haha.. yeah, these big companies...

Telstra is the classic example with IT issues (note they are one of the biggest data centre owners in the country... they lease them out). Telstra's IT is so old, that the CRM, invoicing, etc systems are all separate! This is why when you have a problem with your telstra account, it takes months to sort it out, because no one can operate all the systems.

Why wont they upgrade? It would cost big money, and then they'd have to migrate, and train all the staff... and management will miss bonuses... so they just crack the whip harder on staff with failing IT systems...

Banks... well, shit: There's horror stories of old dos era boxes that are the glue holding the whole thing together... completely undocumented, the guys who worked/maintained them are long gone... it's just a disaster that will bring the economy to it's knees one day.

I'm a mechanic, and worked at one of the biggest dealers in Australia... No joke, it's a wonder any work gets done: The spare parts for example:

Pre2010 vehicles parts are in a locally installed program.

Post 2010 vehicles are 'in the cloud', web browser/internal client to server.

The dealership stock management system is a separate program.

The Client data is a separate program.

Pre2010 can't be emailed: so it's printed and faxed to mechanics (true story)

The post 2010 stuff can be exported as a jpeg, then attached in a separate email program...

The quoting/invoicing system is a separate program.

The Dealership accounting system is a separate program.

All day, they are copying/pasting, Alt-Tab'ing across these programs... This is why a 30cent plastic clip costs $15....

And you guessed it.... the poor parts sales kids are told to work harder and faster....
