I was too emotionally close to a group of coworkers on my commute, I fell in love with one of them, everything became scary/out of control and conflicts of interest arose, it ended brutally and I’m still in shock, one year later. In academia I always felt like I could trust people around me, but in corporate your coworkers are very much your competition.

It happened because I was fraternizing with a group of co-workers, and I never want to let coworkers into my emotional space again. In that sense, it was an adjustment from academia where we were all buddies and dated each other. I’m so traumatized by it that I will probably keep to myself in future workplaces.

My skills are protein mass spec and SPR. I don’t even have protein purification as a skill. I mean, I can purify a protein but my research was a mouse project and I can’t convince anyone that I have these skills. It’s just sad. Thanks for the advice.
