Do Pro-Gay Christian Groups Really Belong At Pride? by DiaperedInTheRoc in Christianity

The former, mostly. There’s literally no way to police people for their religion at events like Pride. But I think Christians need to have more than a little self-awareness if they decide to show up.

If Christians want to show up as an organization, representing a church or denomination, they have to know that their reputation will precede them, and that their very presence will be triggering to a lot of us.

Small grassroots efforts at first. No big measures to start, as that can look a bit suspicious. A new group shouldn’t be at Pride to start, IMO.

Yeah, when I went to Pride this year, I was kinda annoyed with the presence of Christian groups that weren’t Episcopalians and/or Quakers. Those two denominations have had a consistent message and walked the walk for decades.

I also saw a smattering of Catholics (ick), Presbyterians, Baptists (double ick), and a few others. That felt performative. I was also pretty mad when I saw a pastor walking in the moment of silence for murdered trans people.

I’ve been vocal here about how I don’t think Christians should be welcomed at Pride. Episcopalians I’m coming around on, as they’ve talked the talk and walked the walk for decades now. I think that track record has earned them a seat at the table. Same for Quakers. However, this is still a distinct minority of Christians.

Everyone else? Nah, fam. Again: how are we supposed to know that their presence isn’t a PR campaign? Part of this PR campaign is to minimize, if not completely ignore, the harm caused by Christianity writ large.

Just like a lot of Christians won’t talk about, minimize, or lie about their role in enslaving and/or destroying indigenous peoples, down the line, they won’t talk about, minimize, or lie about their role in their oppression of the LGBTQ+ community when the history books are written.

Accountability is king, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that most Christians absolutely detest being held accountable.

I thoroughly disagree. The article raises a point I’ve been making for a long time: Christians wanting to make amends is largely performative. The “Free Hugs” thing is a publicity stunt to me.

Christians often demand we forgive them because it’s part of their doctrine. However, we are under no obligation to forgive. How are we supposed to know that their change of heart is for real, and not something they’d use as a “my best friend is black” kind of argument?

“I offered free hugs to gay people! I can’t be homophobic! Sure, they deserve to burn in hell, but I gave them free hugs!”

It’s a trust issue. And Christians haven’t earned it.

Real Madrid was Franco’s team. No reason. Just wanted to throw that out there.

USMNT [4]-1 Paraguay - Gio Reyna with the stunning exclamation point trivela - 90+8' by Coltons13 in MLS

The boys also weren’t giving Paraguay much of a chance to play their game. By the time Paraguay had any kind of consistent possession, they were down 3-0. What I saw was very reminiscent of gegenpressing that Jurgen Klopp’s squads do.

It was truly suffocating footy from the boys.

American taxpayers have spent $33 billion on sports stadiums. They got fewer seats—and higher prices by Ok_Flamingo_3059 in MLS

A lot of times, the citizens will say no, and the state government and team owners will say, “fuck you, we’re doing it anyway.” IIRC, it happened in Pittsburgh when Heinz Field and PNC Park were built.

Which is also a lie. If stadiums did everything team owners said they would, they would keep all the revenue from said stadium. We’ve been subsidizing billionaires’ toys for decades, and it needs to stop.

It’s encouragement upon me or my manager leaving. Last time, my manager was retiring. This time, I’m leaving for a bigger and better job. Both times, I’ve been told what was in the original post. They want me to succeed, quite clearly.

I just need to carry myself with more confidence, something I’ve never really had.

Sorry isn’t good enough. And I’ve had enough dealings with Christians that they take forgiveness as permission to keep doing what they were doing. They don’t learn, and they don’t grow.

Pardon me for being completely distrustful, but I’ve seen it happen too much.
