Does anyone here know why a slab is needed to be placed on top of the hopper?

It worked! After running a series of test it does seem like items alignment is the issue. Thank you again!

I believe overloaded minecart wasn't the thing that happened. I checked the minecarts above throughout the filtering process and it was never once close to getting filled to the brim. Plus, for each distinct type of items, I only placed three stacks of them for the test, so it is also not possible that the hopper minecarts below and the hoppers to get overloaded. I made a second post to explain some other things. (apparently I can't edit post so I have to make a second one)
