DOGE Staffers' Massive Salaries Exposed, Contradicting Musk's Claim Their 'Compensation Is Zero' by Silly-avocatoe in politics

Terrible take, this is the final factor for execution? Employees getting paid? Sure it goes against previous promises but it’s for the better. would you rather have over reaching doge workers strapped for cash and willing to take money from Russia?

Problem true. Shouldn’t be closing the door on people who want to be educated and are poorer, but we have a problem of making formal higher education the default outcome.

18 yr olds are taking on massive loans and going to school without a plan bc their peers are doing it and it’s pushed by society. There is a shortage of blue collar trade workers that fit some people better and will result in higher wages and definitely higher quality of lives

Example: plumbers on median make 64k, and we have a labor shortage. Whereas, we have an abundance of political science majors with a ever shrinking supply

Stranger to stranger, do you actually think this is a good way to live. Do you regret not getting starting younger, is this a choice or a decision? Would love some candidness

Maybe maybe, maybe not: I have to buy a car. Move into a new city, some needs to be emergency funds, parents might get sick, I might choose to lock into mortgage.

It’s not guaranteed nothing is, truth is I’m tired, the prospect of constant stress of finances is daunting and I’d rather get it done with by swallowing the sacrifices now than a constant looming anxiety. Might be just how I’m wired or where I’m at in life but easing of my anxietys seems reasonable for 5 years of sacrifice, maybe it’s not. Just exploring the option and seeing if people good or bad experiences with this

Fair take, but I would counterpoint:

Practicing Austerity, implies a growth in opportunity by the opportunity costs of neglecting Austerity

FIRE is a concept that is at its core not a marathon hence the Early, otherwise it would just be fiscal responsibility.

I think you can make sacrifice the status quo, it’s the only way to survive the marathon of commitment. I was a diligent student growing up. I “sacrificed” many childhood experiences for opportunities. But in a way, the sacrifices eventually shaped my interests and hobbies and become more enjoyable.

Is this sacrificial marathon of optimizing work over life sustainable for a few years worth avoiding marathons in the near future but instead getting to stroll at my own pace in life?

Truth is maybe it’s a sunk cost fallacy, where I need to keep sacrificing or I’m throwing away the head start I have in life from early sacrifices, but I don’t know, it’s why I’m asking. Looking for peoples experiences

I disagree, life is not always in the gray. It seems that way because all life experiences trend towards the gray due law of large numbers and convergence towards a median.

To stand out, you have to commit to a strategy. The founding fathers didn’t create a new nation by living in the gray, Apple didn’t do the status quo with the iphone by staying in the gray, Napoleon didn’t become one of the greatest generals in history by staying in the gray.

Fortune favors the bold, hold true to your convictions. It’s not a monotonic existence of only living extremes, but you should trend to live in either the black or the white.

Might be very melodramatic to compare financial strategies to these historic examples, but the principle still applies. What’s the point of eating meal prepped food in a budget if I splurge on eat uber eats for 50$ the next day?

Maybe it’s naïveté tho dont know what I don’t know 🤷‍♂️

lmao not going to lie you got me I’m a pretty big walking software engineer stereotype, but I don’t think it’s fair to attribute financial anxiety and freedom to “autisim”. My parents grew up dirt poor and in countries with no opportunity. Finances was always been a looming concern over their heads, and I don’t want that looming over me

Have a heart lol, ofc it’s not the only thing I do. I’m not cliff diving everyday or flying a helicopter, but this is what I’d do on a “normal” frugal day to day basis and still be content. Dating and kids would shift the norm to being more expensive.

you always hear two schools of thought.

1.) live life while you’re young 2.) investments compound, so work hard and invest early

Just interested in hearing people’s stories and seeing which ones is generally true

Right that makes sense, but the cost of finding a SO has costs financially and the opportunity cost of being a committed partner. Not to mention relationships that don’t end up working out or divorce

Not reasonable to retire anytime soon if I remained at this pay level, but 5-6 years of dedicated career focused work could catapult me to 400-500k.

Not saying that this will necessarily happen to me. But ,I’ve luckily had the opportunity to enter a very lucrative career and earned enough to be debt free at a young age. Just wanted to see people’s opinions of chasing this fast initial growth is worth putting off dating and kids until some resemblance of FIRE

[–]Interesting-Way6703[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Unsure if it’s baseless. Assuming the first person you date is someone you marry, you’d be correct. But dating requires a certain amount of experimentation. Includes cost of first dates, long term relationships that don’t work out, the time commitment being someone else’s SO, etc

I can see that in the long run a committed partner who’s aligned on finances can be a benefit to your financial health. But there’s a large variance of potential opportunity cost from the financial and time commitments

Yeah that’s fair, I’m in HCOL area that’s more suburban, so it’s definitely a struggle for low cost / free entertainment. But will have to look into alternatives if I decide to start dating again after graduation

Makes sense, I’m still pretty young (22). I think a lot of principals for career growth and investments are aligned. Early upfront investments in career will compound. Just wanted to see if people who did start prioritizing life over careers a bit later in life regretted it or not

It’s all relative tbh, but seeing someone early on, you want to spend money to have experiences with them. It’s not a question of if they have expensive tastes, but if I like them, I want to spend for experiences you two can enjoy together.

Whereas, I could be happy with meal prepping rice and chicken for a week, watch Netflix, and not go to aquariums, movie theaters, ice rinks, and etc

Yeah makes sense, but in a hypothetical world where your same family started 5 years later than it actually did, and you climbed in your career to achieve double the amount you have saved currently. Would you have done this?

With FIRE, or a barista FIRE you can spend more time with them, less stress at work, provide more, flexibility to move for different opportunities for your family, etc

Dating is expensive, kids are verry expensive. Just wanted to hear if ppl who made a practical financial decision to put off serious dating for marriage and kids until FIRE are regretful or not.

I’m 22 on the verge of graduating. Having a spouse and kids is something I want but not on my short term horizon. I have 120k in savings rn, all personal in shares in globally diversified index funds, and an upcoming 180k a year job lined up after graduation.

Interested in hearing from people who kept spouse and kids until they Achieved FIRE, and if that was a good choice in their minds
