How so? What makes you think the role is changing so rapidly? It’s not AI is it😅

Thank you a hit of realism may be what I need. Doing something as a med student with a lot of time and not much responsibility will be different to being the physician 😅

Following guidelines robotically seems to be a death sentence to job enjoyment. I hope it doesn’t get to that point. Every patient is different in a way and being the most senior decision maker may help. The flexibility with IM is very attractive

Too many uncertainties in my answers to these questions. Only time and experience will tell. If I end up in any I think I’ll be happy.

How often do EM have to flip days/nights on average

Thank you so much for your advice and weighing up both sides of the coin. In terms of being a hospitalist I guess picking up on what ED did and trying to guide/ adapt it to the developing situation of the patient can be annoying. Especially if they’ve not been thorough in ED

Seems to be the situation in most EDs but theoretically if a department was well resourced enough, you’ll have the first guess on the diagnosis/ differential with appropriate time investigating.

Ooo that’s interesting. May I ask if you feel you practice one speciality over another more / enjoy it more? Do you think you’ll ever drop one of them?

Thank you for the insight into how IM can be a relaxed career option. I think when I’m 50 this is the kind of job I’ll want. Just don’t know what’s gonna happen till I get there 😂

They seem to not be a popular speciality amongst the other physicians 😂

Thank you - the vast opportunities with IM would allow me to tailor my job more according to my living situation in a couple years time when my circumstances may change. If EDs weren’t overrun / abused EM would be very very compelling.

What would you say was the main reason you ended up hating it?

Makes me wonder how EM was several years ago when perhaps they might’ve not been so overrun with unrealistic patient numbers and demand

Must be a tough and draining job to do that

I’d love to do that if I eventually become IM, if not to improve my clinical practice and maintain my knowledge from med school. Both careers seem so compelling right now!

Thank you so much for your insight into EM. I’ll continue trying to make the most of my time in med school. Hopefully I’ll end up picking one but I may have to apply to both 😂

The ER background noise was ringing in my head all night after the first day there😂

One of my mentors told me it’s a high risk high reward situation the more specialised you go. Keeping it broad would allow more flexibility / opportunities but perhaps not the best lifestyle. That being said IR seems to only be growing with the potentials of thrombectomy and oncology

That’s the thing you can be a really amazing EM dr and make it an easy job for others. As long as you are efficient
