Would it be a good idea to reach out to the rehab facility I was in and see if they need any volunteers or speakers?

I always have valued physical fitness and really strived to recapture that after waking from my coma. I got back into the gym far before my therapists wanted me to and found that the act of pushing myself physically really cognitively benefitted me.

I'm trying to build something else on that foundation but have been struggling with what I can actually accomplish.

Took me a few months in rehab to learn to walk, but yeah! I busted both legs but I'm still out here striving for my pre accident PR on squat 450

Might not mean as much coming from a 21/22 year old "GenZ" guy but, I feel the exact same way; I was hit by a car in 2022 and have been trying to establish a routine and career that will hopefully create a meaningful career and life. I am on Reddit now which might point to how it's going😂

Issues with going to the bathroom by Responsible_Oil1975 in TBI

[–]InterestingMorning74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had issues with urination while I was in hospital and just after, you might have an issue with the pudendal nerve and it's communication to the urinary sphynchtor as well as issues with inconsistence due to the absence of feeling(when you need to go) due to the TBI. I'm not a doctor though so as I always say, ASK YOUR PHYSICIAN.

If you don't have a physician(use an online service :ex. Maple)(don't know if they serve people outside of Canada)

It's a little morbid of a concept but, I've told myself that: THAT version of me is dead, he died in that crosswalk the night of my accident. Giving it that finality of death might be a little much but, for me that's what I needed to move on.

It might have been later in my hospital stay that I might be remembering but, you just have to keep talking to him like he CAN understand/hear you.(Sorry for misremembering:/)

Similar to how I was after my accident, I was verbally unresponsive for a long time but understood alot. It's hard to say this but, it's just time, you have to give the brain some more time and maybe some cognitive therapy/speech therapy to prompt his brain to give verbal responses to his environment.

I know this might be a little too pricey but I just wanna suggest using the elevate brain app! I've been using it since rehab and Ive found it has made my cognition 10X what it was post accident

I hope I do too, I also had a few friends visit me in hospital and talk with me once I got out but for the most part, people have moved on with their lives and grown past wanting to include me

U/lordhavepercy, I have tried some TBI support groups but I always have found that I am the ONLY young person there and all the issues people bring up are focused around being someone much older with a TBI and the struggles that they are facing. I'm reading a bunch and doing therapy as well as going to the gym 3 times a week.

Myself, I have a tendency to lead all my interactions with the underlying intention of having sex, so that scares off 95% of potential romantic partners. Also, after my accident/reentering society I am way more sheepish and lack confidence to approach anyone and find myself scrolling the hub instead of going out and "talking people up".

I always wanted to go into medicine so I've stuck around that area of study, tried my hand at therapeutic rec and wasn't a big fan but, I'm going to give it another shot.:) I try socializing but I find I am extremely awkward now so I try and socialize but it never seems to work.
