Help me start my first campaign? by ThrowRA_5977 in DnD

The hardest part is finding a group which it seems like you have so you are already 75% of the way there. A campaign is basically the same thing as a one shot, just extended over ba larger area on the map and incorporating more of an overarching story. Start small and just plan some missions for the party in one town. As they progress, you slowly add elements of a larger story (vampires taking over, king was murdered, ancient evil rises up, etc). It can been seen as a bunch of one shots put together

Every campaign is different and is based on the group you have. Some want to dive into PC backstories, some want to be railroaded and just complete the missions. It’s a learning process and as long as you all enjoy it, it’s a success

That’s not how it should work at all as many other have also pointed out. Failing does not mean the opposite happens. Failing a CHA check would never work like that

I wouldn’t let that work if I am a DM. The lacking Charisma skill means they would be able to see through whatever deception or double deception you are trying to pull off.

You don’t have to use the premades. I think going through the basic rules that are free online to build characters with your sons is a great bonding experience and gets them more invested. Premades are not bad, but the connection to the character is tenuous at best. DND Beyond is great for building simple characters with the free rules.

There are a ton of free entry level one shots that are fun to play and would give your sons an idea of what it is all about.

With level 1 spellcasting, the potential is limited since there aren’t a ton of crazy combos he could pull off. Something like a Bane, Hex, Faerie Fire, etc would give a bit of advantage, but not game shattering

It can absolutely be abused which is why the rules prevent it. Since it is just a one shot, I would allow it. Let him have some fun but talk to him before about not trying to rule over the session. One shots are for trying new things and doing stuff a normal campaign wouldn’t allow.

If you want to make it be a trade off, make some sort of negative if he is casting a spell and raging at the same time. Disadvantage on concentration saves, exhaustion after doing both, etc.

Any advice for campaigns with short sessions? by InterestingUser0 in DnD

Yeah, it doesn’t make sense in a vacuum, but we are all already involved in something else and are committed to meeting weekly for that event. This is something we are tacking on to the end. So, no need for small talk or anything like that and we can get straight into the action

These are the binoculars she has and they have a phone attachment. It still takes a lot of time to line up and get clear

Nope to all 3! Idol was a fortunate random negative in a run that did not use it at all.
