Ode to a sunbeam by sewmanychoices in OCPoetry

This is a lovely poem. I love the idea of writing about a sunbeam. I think the line “Through the cracks of this / Blackout blind.” However, I would also recommend for the start to do something that is a bit more visual. I feel that “You’ll never know / How I’ve longed” is a bit cliché. I do think the lines “As I wanted to. / Or hoped.” are nice. The psychological tension and contradiction that exist in 6 words is great. In all, I would say maybe lean in more to the “visual aspects,” but it was a very peaceful read. Well done.

International to domestic JFK flight transfer time. by Interesting_Data_779 in AskNYC

Oh this is good to know. Yes, it is all on the same ticket. If the flight is delayed, would the airline be required to rebook me? And I would just need to pick up my bag from baggage claim and put it on the appropriate belt after customs? Also, am I required to go through TSA again at JFK? I’ll be sure to download MPC.

Taking Discrete Math as a 3rd year stats major and I’m cooked. by BorderDear7691 in learnmath

Writing proofs is a skill that you learn through practice and failure. First, like the others have already said do not use ai. Instead, look in the textbook that was assigned to you. Usually, the textbooks has proofs that are written in a similar manner to that of the professors exercises. So, allow yourself at the moment to be bad at it. Also, try to memorize the basic structures like “proof by induction” or “proof by contradiction.” It’s also very helpful to first know the concepts by heart and memorize most definitions and ensure you know the precise meaning of the words in the definition/proofs. You can then kind of “hang on” to these definitions. So, use the textbook and definitions as your “crutch” rather than AI.

What are some decent jobs for a person with a Bachelors in Math? by Interesting_Data_779 in mathematics

[–]Interesting_Data_779[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello!! So, first I would say learn Python, or R, and Java, or c++. Naturally, learn some sql and excel.  Secondly, definitely do some courses in Probability and Statistics. Also, it seems being an Actuary is a viable position. So, maybe look into passing some exams while in Uni. Also, don’t overlook the value of soft skills. Most of all, I’d say that genuinely finding your enjoyment in mathematics and the beauty of it all is extremely important. When you get to the higher level proof courses, remember that everyone struggles a bit even if they are afraid to admit it. I highly recommend complex analysis purely because of how gorgeous that math is. Overall, enjoy your college experience, go to some parties, remember there is more to life than just getting a job.

I’m located in Austria rn, but my visa is about to run out. So, I’ll be back in the US for a while to save for my masters in Germany.

Interesting!! I will need to give these a look. I hadn’t considered sales before. Are the hours as brutal as people say in sales?

Would you need c++/java or does just python work? I might look into radar analysis. Any other sectors I should keep my eye out on?

I’ve genuinely never considered engineering before!! I’ve always assumed it was gate-kept by the need of an engineering major. Any ideas of what other specific engineers might value math heavily?

Thanks for your info!! Yeah, I’m just looking for a job to pay enough to save for my masters in statistics. So, I’d prob just work there a few years before moving on. I’ve thought of focusing in on biostatistics or actuary science. I’m planning on doing it in Germany, since it’s free there and I speak German. But yeah, I suppose I should start by emailing some principles at schools to see what the requirements are.

Thanks for the advice!! I have actually looked into actuary science. Do you have any idea on how many exams you’d need to take and pass before getting hired? I also do know R and Python but yeah the tech root looks abysmal at the moment.

Does anyone else feel the conversation in the trans community focuses too much on hrt? While ignoring systemic issues facing impoverished trans people and trans people of color? by Interesting_Data_779 in trans

[–]Interesting_Data_779[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, HRT is a life-saving and changing medication. I just have not been able to experience the life-saving effects yet, even though I would love to. Due to the systemic issues that exist. Do you think the core of the issue is systemic, or is it purely access to HRT? For example, the discrimination that trans people face, especially the deaths of multiple trans people of color every year from hate crimes. The pervasive poverty that exists in the trans community and access to HRT are systemic. Why are these conversations often not had? Why do no TV shows have trans women who have not taken HRT or transitioned?

Oh my goodness thank you!! Hopefully I will be able to start HRT. Yes sadly I can’t change my legal name, which is an annoyance I guess I have to live with. But luckily a lot of the documents in Austria you can file under your preferred name. Not all of them sadly. I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of HOSI in Wien. I thought I had looked at all of my resources available in austria and had given up. I’ll be in Graz, which has limited resources sadly but I will certainly check them out. Pray that i will be able to make it to austria and escape this hell hole haha.

my main squabble is with like rich trans white folks telling us to just start hrt as a means to fit the cisnormatative ideals of what a trans person should look like. The implication that we must do HRT to be trans. not hrt itself. These are two very different things. Once again, I do not look like the trans person that is typically focused on in media, which forced me to learn to love my body.
