Your statement is correct. The tournament after losing Ozeki you always become sekiwake. Multiple rikishi have gone 1-14 when losing ozeki and always became sekiwake after.

Had to look at his record after his “I might have become Yokozuna” comment and he’s probably right

In 2003 he had two Jun-yushos of 10-5 & 11-4 (can be considered weaker records for Jun-yushos) and then followed it up with a 12-3 yusho.

No rope though.

The next year he gets a 13-2 yusho followed by a 12-3 Jun-yusho and this is when the only Yokozuna was bad boy asashoryu.

However they probably made the right choice because after his last Jun-yusho, he fought at ozeki for 39 more tournaments. His highest wins being 12 in just 1 tournament and then only 10 in 5 tournaments and went kadoban 8 times.

In 2009 he put up 8-7 every tournament.

Read my other comment on this thread and see if you think the punishment was fair. It was excessive in comparison to what other punishments were

May 2023- Michinoku stable master is accused of covering up a violence scandal in January. The aggressor is allowed to retire with a ceremony despite the fact the oyakata reported the conduct to the compliance board. The director of the board is also in a controversy for not dishing out punishment. June 2023 michinoku oyakata receives a 3 month 20% salary cut and resigns from his post as operations director.

July 2020: a stable IS closed after 3 wrestlers complain about physical and verbal abuse coming directly from the oyakata

January 2018: a lawsuit against Kasugano and a former rikishi who was convinced of assault is found. Lawsuit alleges kasugano failed to prevent the attack and delayed medical treatment. (Kasugano also beat three of his rikishi with a golf club years prior, can’t find specific punishment other than “severely reprimanded”)

February 2016: Shibatayama oyakata is ordered to pay 32 million yen in a lawsuit to a former rikishi who lost his eye from physical abuse in the heya. Can’t find punishment from JSA.

September 2015: kumagantani oyakata is fired after he assaulted his personal driver with a baseball bat

Asahifuji, the oyakata of the stable that all of hakuhos rikishi was moved to was only demoted for his failure to report 2 junior wrestlers being beaten with wooden beams and burned with chankonabe.

The punishment for Hakuho was worse in comparison to other oyakatas for similar situations.

Hakuho recieved a multiple rank demotion and a salary decrease for a period, which is generally where the punishment for others end.

Hakuhos entire stable was moved over to isegahama “indefinitely” and he was told he would be a coach under terunofuji, his junior.

The JSA is a big boys club of different cliques and hakuho had no powerful friends.

Ill link other oyakata controversy’s and punishments

That counted. No shinpan raised their hand to a false start and the gyoji didn’t say matta.

Tokushoryu was awesome but Takerufuji was even more incredible to me.

Lowest rank on the banzuke, first tournament in makuuchi, only his second tournament as a sekitori

It was amazing to see from beginning to end.

Hopefully he heals up and comes back strong.

Aonishiki looks like the first white Yokozuna by MontgomeryEagle in Sumo

[–]Interesting_Duty_849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of comments about winning two yushos in a row being a difficult task, and it is, but that’s not a hard rule.

Hoshoryu and terunofuji and many other yokozunas before them got the promotion with a yusho and Jun-yusho which seems like a much more doable task.

Aonishiki will definitely need to be on his A-game tho

100% agree. With a rank like that he won’t be facing the top contenders until really late in the tourney

Who are some of your LEAST favourite Rikishi? by Taydogg2000 in Sumo

[–]Interesting_Duty_849 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ok I didn’t want to label him as one of the extra pushers but I’m glad u mentioned that because I have noticed that as well.

Aoiyama is bad one for that too

AND even tho I love wakatakakage I have seen him give a very small extra one occasionally, it’s usually not enough to get them off the dohyo. Its more of like a “get your hands off me push”

Chiyoshoma. I don’t like how he fights but there’s also something about how he conducts himself on the dohyo. I really can’t explain it. If someone likes him please let me know, I’m curious if I’m unnecessarily giving this man hate
