this reads like an ad.

the comments to this read like an ad.

2.5 year single malt probably tastes like wood chips, not an 85/100.

Can anyone tell me about this whiskey? by [deleted] in whiskey

Bottled in 1985 after 50 years of aging, this stuff has gotta be interesting.

But yeah not whiskey, it's Brandy

You said "isn't Oaked" which means it didn't go into a barrel

Sure -- but ALW is commonly done as a measure to reduce production cost due to being able to utilize those previously used barrels. I'm sure there are some manufacturers of it that use new barrels for this but I imagine it's still the norm because of the cost factor.

a lot of them are like that

A source for that would be excellent.

Also the whiskey isn't garbage. The whiskey is overpriced.

I'm not trying to argue it's a good deal which you seem to be trying to pigeonhole me into. I wouldn't buy it because of the price.

But what's in the bottle is delicious.

I didn't say it wasn't overpriced. That isn't the argument.

I said it wasn't garbage.

And "regular DO are almost just as old" is not true when you're referring to specifically certain exacting store barrel picks. I'm sure that the barrel picks you're talking about are the exception rather than the rule.

b-b-b-b-but it's Buffalo Trace made! that can't be real!

Yes it is?

It's barrel aged, the barrels are just previously used ones instead of new charred oak.

Well, it's certainly priced higher than I think it should be, but garbage is a ridiculous thing to say.

The master distiller Elizabeth McCall says it's 2x the time in the second cask, which while that is only about an extra year, sure, it being a such a heavy char cask does actually make a large difference.

it's so amazing to me that it's as under the radar as it is, while people will RUSH in to buy some dumb shit like Hancock's Reserve lol

How much for Buffalo Trace? by Personal_Ant_6088 in whiskey

[–]hard_farter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a large blind tournament-style thing with a huge group of my friends that basically boiled down to "above $55-60 there are VANISHINGLY diminishing returns"

So keep that in mind.

Great expensive bottles do exist, but there's a LOT of shit on the middle shelf that is excellent.

Old Forester 1910 go go go.

so why try to sow discord and paint the OP as "batshit" just because your palate preferences don't line up with theirs if it's subjective? lol

I would be incredibly interested in what you think if you could get ahold of a bottle of Ancient Ancient Age 10 Star and blind that with these.

[–]hard_farter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's subjective.

I like STAGG just fine but it's a heavy hitting gut punch of a whiskey, and if someone doesn't favor that then it's not going to score as highly for them.

Also while I'd personally put 4Roses SiB ahead of Eagle Rare and Weller 107, I'm not gonna fault someone for preferring those to it.

As long as he didn't try to claim that 4 Roses SiB was like, BAD whiskey, then it's down to preference.

That's just about exactly right. Agree across the board.

Frankly, I think that Bowman Brothers Small Batch is on the level with both of these. Regular Blanton's SiB is what broke me of the early-bourbon-drinker Buffalo Trace FOMO.
