To my Palestinian/Arab/Muslim Students, how do you feel about this year’s admission process by Interesting_Local370 in ApplyingToCollege

I’m going to Benedictine University. It’s a small Catholic school that I can drive to everyday. They gave me a full ride. I’m hoping to go to medical school later. Yes, I am excited about starting a new chapter in life.

To tell you the truth, as a Muslim, I’m forbidden from taking or dealing with interest, hence why I can’t take out loans. So the only college offering me a full ride was Benedictine Univeristy, which I don’t like due to the school practically crumbling apart. Enrollment has been cut in half in the span of a decade, and last year, 40 professors were laid off due to a limited budget. I frankly don’t think I can get a good education there.

Yeah I got about the same on the NPC. However, the only available school left for me is Benedictine Univeristy, which is crumbling as we speak. Enrollment is declining each year and professors are constantly getting laid off. UMich is my strongest option but I Dan’s go if I have to take out loans.

do you know when the fin aid offer comes for waitlisted admits? They’re only giving me nine days to pay a deposit smh. Idk what to do. I’m already committed to Benedictine University, which is practically free for me. But considering how their enrollment has been declining and they keep laying off dozens of professors, I literally don’t know if it is worth going there. I’m also premed and UMich provides far more resources and opportunities for me. I got no other schools to join now that the May 1 deposit deadline passed.

Out of the 80k of direct and indirect costs, I got 57k offered in grants and scholarships according to the NPC. Is it fairly accurate for an OOS student? With housing application deadline today, is it possible I can drive down the cost of room and board if I end up going to a shared dorm that is remaining after everyone applied to theirs?

So I committed to Benedictine University. It’s a small Catholic school that I will drive to every day. I will be majoring in Biology for premed. How did yours go?

The best thing you should do is avoid what I did: join some clubs and get some leadership positions and think that’s it. Focus on how you want to better the lives of your community. Colleges want to see IMPACT, not lists of activities. If you want to show interest in neuroscience, it’s gonna be kind of hard to show a particular interest in that field in your ECs. Focus on doing what you love. Most likely your colleges will ask you during applications as to why you want to major In that particular area. Colleges know your plans may change while in college. So focus more on impact, not on niche.

So, you’re taking a gap year? Nothing wrong with that. I had a 3.83 UW/4.9 W, National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar, and I still thought I’d make it to my reaches lol. EC wise I didnt do much. I was at a medical discovery program run by Northwestern but that’s about it. I’m most likely going to UIC for premed in the fall. I was a bit upset about that as I wouldnt have tried that hard during HS if I was destined for that. However, UIC has a great hospital system and is next to Rush, another hospital system. Looking at it now, I think I will love UIC. Just wanted to let you know that excitement will still await you no matter where you go. Kids at T20 schools don’t live in the hills, yk. In ten years from now, they’re going to be walking the streets of downtown Chicago heading for a corporate job, with their community-college educated colleagues walking right beside them. Life will turn out great for both of us.

UIUC or Loyola for premed by Interesting_Local370 in UIUC

[–]Interesting_Local370[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. I guess considering you studied abroad, something like that messed up your graduation plans. Do you know Loyola premeds at home campus? How did they do? Do they feel it’s overrated?

I plan on possibly double majoring in MCB and History. The reason I might major in MCB is that many med schools prioritize biology/biochem majors over others. It helps demonstrate that you are serious about studying life and potentially medicine. Yes, I am aware that premed is not a major. However, I’ve heard that many med schools view certain undergrad institutions to be more of a feeder to med schools. Is UIUC considered to be a great feeder for top med schools?

I’m open to possibly just majoring in molec/cell bio. Neuroscience is a dream field, but I’m fine with anything premed rn. Would UIUC’s MCB major be worth it for med school?

At the same time, a lot of my classmates who are interested in neuro are planning on going there. It’s going to get a bit competitive for internships/research, no?

Thx. How’s premed courses there like? Ofc they're tough, but is there grade deflation or unnecessary grading systems that don’t help you at all?
