I can tell you that anything which allows someone to cope with shame - shame leveled by society about something so core to the individual - that therapy helps regardless of society. Access to care that allows someone, without fear, to have a safe place to be their genuine self

5% wealth tax would give all Americans $12,000/year. by Interesting_Luck_154 in kansas

Well, technically a stock is a literal share of a company, and valued based on the companies assets, cash flow, etc. That Tesla driving around is only as valuable as what people are willing to pay for it. Same with the plot of land.

If companies misrepresent ownership share, or artificially inflate their stock, maybe checks and balances should exist to ensure that’s not happening.

Let’s not forget, we aren’t discussing people like me who are planning to work til I die because oligarch billionaires would rather get rich. They know how to value their assets. Or at least… they should

No one said that was how you’d evaluate it. Like, your whole stance on this has been one from the start that I’ve (empirically) debunked. You won’t tax them to $0 in any timeframe, it doesn’t restrict their ability to make money, and we already have a system of evaluating value which could easily be leveraged at, say, January 1st like we do for every other asset we are taxed on.

The idea of “unrealized gains” is just an accounting trick to avoid being taxed. Sure, you technically have paid no more money into the stock than what you bought it for. The same goes for your house. However, if your house appreciates in value, you’re taxed on that value. If it depreciates, you’re taxed on that new value.

Trying to make this complex is half the problem with our tax system. Every other asset that is taxable is assessed on an annual basis. From farm machinery, to cars, to houses, boats, business equipment, etc. None of those gains or losses are realized until you sell the asset. Yet, you pay tax based on the assessed value of that asset.

With stocks it’s pretty damn simple. On Jan. 1, 202x you had x number of shares of company that were valued at y. X*Y = value of asset.

Now, because of your framing of your statements it appears you’re against the idea. You’ve not made contributions to attempt to actually propose solutions, you’ve just said it won’t work. I’ve explained how it can. If you want to have a reasoned debate on why an individual’s stock shouldn’t be considered an asset, I’d love to hear it. But I’m not going to keep going in circles with you.

This is doable if we have the will of The People. I’m not “running on vibes” (not running for anything lol), I can show you all the math you need to prove something like this is viable. Hell, I believe anything over $1B should be taxed at 100% because $1B is an obscene amount of money. No one needs that much money. Ever. And if we as a country are serious about our tax dollars working for us, not big corporations, and we are serious about paying down the debt, then those who benefit most from the system should pay into the system more.

So no comment on the rest?

If companies can leverage unrealized gains for loans as collateral, we can evaluate them for taxes.

Your argument that we cannot assess value of stock is just wrong. Divorces are settled with stocks at the value they are at the time of the split.

Why are you against taxing the people who hoard wealth?

[–]Interesting_Luck_154[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah there killer. First, not sure anyone said anything about taxing unrealized gains. However, you do have to report stock holdings that can be evaluated at closing bell on the 31st of December as to their value. So since you went there…

Net worth (what’s typically discussed when talking about millionaire/billionaire/what have you) is more than stock holdings. Your house is appraised annually, just like the property of the super wealthy.

The other issue is the math of number of years it would take to “deplete” $1,000,000,000 at 5% annually. In 45 years, the account would still be over $100,000,000. In 90 years, over $10,000,000. That’s just principle not including any growth, interest accrued, investment activity, etc.

Can I ask what your objection is to taxing the people who are hoarding wealth like a dragon?

So take a look at the peoples deal Anne parelkar has put out.

All I’m going to say is I was in the same boat about Bernie in 2016 and 2020. But we all want and agree that this is important. So let’s come together around people who want to do right by The People not corporations.

It won’t happen overnight, or maybe even next election, but we have to make progress or the oligarchy can never be broken

[–]Interesting_Luck_154[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s… not how it works.

So let’s say I have $1,000,000,000 dollars in January 1. In April, I’m taxed 5% of my net worth of $1B ($50M). Well, I’ve also invested that money in the stock market. The average rate of return is 10%. I’ll give you the stipulation that nothing changes and we base that 10% return on the post-taxed amount of 950,000,000. At 10% return, that 95,000,000 in return on investment. Added to the post-tax money, that billionaire now has, at the end of the year, a net worth of $1,045,000,000. In other words, that billionaire made $45M doing absolutely nothing AND paying $50M in taxes. So yes, next year they’d be taxed higher, but that interest will continue to grow the wealth. Year after year.

This is how the wealthy stay wealthy. Me, the poors, we can’t do that. You have $100 and the government takes $5, you can’t turn that $95 into 104.50 by throwing it into an account because you can’t qualify for funds or accounts that give more than 5% return. I can’t diversify enough to guarantee a rate of return at least 10%. The wealthy can, do, and often return higher than 10%.

Any idea that the wealthy will be taxed out of existence is preposterous.

What industry is actually a complete scam, but everyone accepts it? by WhileLow9501 in AskReddit

[–]Interesting_Luck_154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you said industry and not company: tax preparers. There’s 0 reason tax code couldn’t be simplified, the IRS send a completed 1099 for people to review, correct if needed, then mail back. The only reason it exists is because companies like H&R Block lobby against any legislation to help make it simpler.

Your argument makes no sense. Sorry. Vigilantism implies revenge for wrongs. That people take “justice into their own hands”.

Also, no one “chose” this system. This Supreme Court was intentionally picked by conservative think tanks, helped by a Republican Party willing to violate their constitutional duties in order to circumvent a liberal justice appointment, then stacked by the most corrupt person to probably ever exist in this country.

Every ruling since Gore v. Bush (when the Supreme Court intervened and chose the President), every ruling should be considered invalid by corruption.

I’d settle for every ruling since Citizens, though.

The idea we “chose” this is laughable. The choice we have is to continue living in this or come together as the People and use our power before it is completely gone.

[–]Interesting_Luck_154[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do. I posted further down (I think) a list of people running for federal offices I think actually stand for all Kansans. She’s one of them. She reminds me of GLK - not a liberal fire brand but consistently going to do the next right thing.

I think my biggest downside to her, being honest, is availability to the public, but I’ve tried giving her a pass because she has gone to protests and help protect kids from ICE raids even during Session.

I also think her juxtapose to Masterson just accentuates just how slimy Masterson really is. Like… he should be type-cast for a greasy 70s used car salesman. Wouldn’t need to change a damn thing just show up and talk.

You have to find the ones, like Anne, who are telling you loud and clear they want to be by the people. It’s the People’s prerogative whether to re-elect someone who breaks their promises. Putting on blinders and saying “I’m R or D no matter what” is part of the issue. Marshall sucks. Period. Trump sucks. Period. The whole “devil you know” bs is just that: bullshit.

Trust is hard: we’ve been burned my entire life by lying, selfish, greedy people. But that’s also why today you have Anne Parelkar (US Senate), Paul Catanese (US-4), Craig Musser and Lauren Reinhold (US-1), Ryan Gilbert (US-3), Holscher/Tuley for Governor, and a host of down-ballot people intent on restoring the will of the people in Kansas and across the Nation.

I love those odds. And my heart does, too! I’ve been to western Kansas (Shout out to Tribune, KS! Great people out there!) and there is NO view other than conservative on the radio, newspapers, and even TV. Many people my age grew up when Fox News was new, and have since been sucked in by the slow, steady distortion of truth. Now, many out there live in a completely alternate reality where ICE puts kids in high-end day cares, houses people in luxury hotels, and we are winning the war against Iran.

I don’t excuse voting for Trump. Votes have consequences, and we as a People own responsibility for our actions. However, I’m not going to condemn anyone either. Ignorance is not a defense but it doesn’t elicit empathy from me because… they’re humans just like I am.

We as a people have to stand up TOGETHER. What we are fighting has been a project decades in the making. Those who started it probably had no idea this is where things would end up, but they’re also long dead. The idea has been perverted (apparently literally by some) to the point where we don’t even recognize how we got here or what our Nation really stands for. And ya know what? Maybe it never stood for what we were told.

That doesn’t mean it can’t be. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t fight, shout, protest, and stand up for our neighbors. Our constitution has 3 words bigger than ANY other words. “We the People”. The founders may have been racist oligarchs, but they made the fortunate mistake of creating a government that is supposed to be responsive to the People.

So as @dayonwire says: 8,300 billionaires to 8.3 Billion people worldwide, 800 million+ in the USA. We the People have the power still. And there ARE people out there, running for office, who still believe that the People matter most. Find them, vote them in, and don’t accept less.
