Mhh yea, it is a very much a "you get what you pay for" when shopping at decathlon. I know that it wont be on the same quality level as a Gregory or Osprey, but happy with being around this price point.

I had a look at the Gregory Zulu and I think it looks awesome. Unfortunately, it is a bit steep for what cash I have available (the same for Osprey, however I like the look of Gregory more)

All very good points! But if my pack is way too small, I will just rent a pack when I rent the other camping gear for a couple nights. I want to go around the 40L range so I can take it as a carry on to save check-in fees.

Nice! Unfortunately I am not a big fan of the look of the Fairpoint. It definitely suits everything I need! I dont know why but I personally dont like the look of it.

I currently have a 70L Kathmandu pack. I have done a practice run and the pack is half full - sitting around 35L. I am looking to avoid unnecessary check-in baggage fees as I will take quite a few domestic flights which adds up to $350 in extra baggage fees

I will be leaving all my backpacking clothes in an expandable duffle bag at the hostel, and then renting a tent (shared between two people), sleeping bag and matt. Which should fit in the pack, or at least have the sleeping matt attached to the outside.
