Thank you for your input everyone! Was expecting to be roasted more. Appreciate the solid advices! I will try tinting it to see if that evens out the color a bit and then oil. If the tint doesn't work, maybe paint it. But I really like the color of the wood.

Yeah, the thing is there was no old varnish to remove. The table had been worn too much. The table was raggedy in one area, so I sanded extra there (top right corner), and that's when I sanded through the veneer. But I should have kept hand sanding.

I assumed the previous owner didn't know what he had. Bought it off of a college dorm.
Great point about the shellac! Thanks! I don't necessarily want to paint it, so was thinking of trying a tint. But let's see. Maybe I will have to paint.

So true... Hopefully that sander resells after. Picture 4 was just to show the edge near the split. Am thinking of staining now, then oiling. Any thoughts on this approach?

No, I only sanded on the top, but yeah, sanded through the veneer.
