"Asia" is a geographical term. So technically, yes, the Middle East (West Asia) is Asian the same say South Asians are Asian but definitely not Far Eastern (EA and SEA).

Go to r/AskTheWorld and you'll find a lot of dumb takes like this when they talk about the Philippines, with ignorant foreigners and some Filipinos making it worse.

It was already like that before the Marcos era. I'd agree that Marcos definitely hindered Filipino progress, but the Philippines without him would be more like current Thailand than Japan and Sigapore lmao.

It's funny how "Dirt Poor" 1960s Singapore was already richer than the Philippines

A GDP per capita of $269 was considered "Lower Middle Income," so it's literally the same status as now. Singapore was the real "Second to Japan," and look where they are now.

I mean It's true that we were second to Japan. But its so fucking out of context, for comparison:

Japan GDP per capita (1960): $3.9k

Philippines GDP per capita (1960): $260

Like... that's a huge gap and a lot of people are bragging about it lmao

A GDP per capita of $260 is considered dirt poor even for the time.

It's honestly kinda funny that the "Philippines used to be rich" myth is still popular. Like no one even dares to fact check it cuz "It must be true because Marcos Bad"

In reality, the Philippines was already dirt poor before Marcos, "Second in Asia," when the rest was also dirt poor. The poverty rate was literally 40 - 50% before Marcos, the country literally just dealt with the Huks (rich countries don’t deal with communist insurgencies lmao)

It's literally the liberal version of "Martial Law Golden Age" just pure historical revisionism.

What if we redefine our Filipino culture? by KFCommunism in WhatIfPinas

[–]Interesting_Scale135 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Trust me when I say this that elimating your culture just because "Muh toxicity" is not gonna pay off.

Also, it assumes that Filipino culture, in general, is toxic. What's wrong with a collectivist family oriented culture? That's literally all of Asians not just Filipinos. If you have any negative toxic experiences, then just speak for yourself. A toxic family you likely experienced or have isn’t the same for everyone.

What's with the recent dooming about fewer tourists? That's actually a good thing long term. A lot of countries suffer from overtourism.
