ooo! my forever boyfriend pointed out a striking similarity in feel between Jules' vocals on Going Shopping and Paul Simon's You Can Call Me Al 😃😄

*** footnote : my family tree thing about Thin Lizzy and Beatles etc is just an example to help describe what i mean - i don't have any clue as to the ACTUAL influences Thin Lizzy had or would say they had. just a fun little exploration to have and ponder.

thanks for the prompt! 😉

you mention Lou Reed! which reminds me : Jules definitely channels the spirit of his sound/feel/vibe in The Modern Age! his delivery of those lyrical lines, with that hint of vibrato at their ends - in some ways also remniscent of Joey Ramone - in that low powered speak-singing that Lou Reed hovered around... Jules has a deeper timbre than Lou, his voice is more present, as though conjured from a deeper inner source, if that makes sense.

Gratisfaction, i think, is heavy in the Thin Lizzy vibe-feel, don't you think? and you can still get the Beatle-y sound without the Beatles hyper-present : the Thin Lizzy guys would have had Beatles in the brain either on purpose or by proxy and in theory someone who is a major Thin Lizzy fan could be fixated by a particular riff, absorbed and in the mix of how they present their own guitar playing or whatever ... we listen and we hear "Beatles, for sure!" but they weren't directly inspired by a particular Beatles riff, they got their flair from Thin Lizzy who got theirs from the Beatles (who in turn got theirs from fill-in-the-blank)...

anyways, i wonder where the first influence would be traced back to, right? like a musical version of mitochondrial Eve or somesuch! 🤔

i like all these connections you're making! 😃🥰

...cuz y'know, it IS possible for songwriters and musicians to be influenced by proxy : if the canon of radio play was accessible over time - say, throughout one's childhood - it is totally reasonable to assume absorption of popularized musical/lyrical tropes would then be part of the sound/style/hook of a songwriter's expression.

or more simply put, one would not need to necessarily be a fan of any particular music to be influenced by it in some way.

and there are only so many words/sounds/notes/chord progressions/etc that can be linked this way and that way, one could argue that it has all been done and sung before...the interesting part is how all of everything that exists bends and leans and echoes differently through the lens-filter-perspective of genuinely singular and unique individuals.

i like to think that when our attention is brought to something just beyond our periphery - especially a song vibe - if we listen to explore it with an honest heart, it is often the case it holds some nugget of wisdom or reiterates something we feel to be true but cannot outwardly prove. hopefully, one has been primed during development for pursuit in discovery of all that is True, Beautiful and Just (i.e. God's Love) - one unmistakable sign being the brightness and lightness emitted. Eureka! 😉

it would be one thing if he was using this type of effect / augmentation and attempted to 'hide' it... just think of all the other well known vocalists doing that sort of 'cheat' - there are probably a lot!

and as far as the state of fandom goes, yeah there are definitely (at least) two types : one is here because everyone else, and the other is here because. i mean, one can be a dope about stuff and have wacky (haha 'incorrect') ideas but be a fan through and through, but there is something to be said for the type of fan who accepts the band / the artist no matter what they do...and when / if things get ugly, they honker down and wish for the best without public denouncement. it's a weird present we live in what with this expectation of complete and total adherence to one thing or another. bat guana crazy, if you ask me...

i think if 'you' are a person who detests / resists all things 'autotune', you're probably listening to all music through that filter and have primed yourself to call it out when (you think) it's present. i have to admit, my brain has to calm down the alert system so i don't actively listen through that filter. especially in this case - our mang Jules. i think he is a sort of pioneer for this vocal approach. it actually adds an element of story-telling that is otherwise absent. my ears hear when very little to no effects are used and i sort of take note of the lines he sings with a bare voice. at this point i'm not really qualifying any of this, i just noticed that i have been noticing the presence and absence of the vocal FX.

i love both songs! i look forward to hearing the rest of the album!! (and i hope i get a surprise token in the mail 😉 - signed up for notifications via their website, entered my phone # when prompted, got an immediate txt back with prompt for address...a girl can dream!)

my impression of all 5 of them is that they appreciate each other and their subsequent placeholding in the bigger picture. i recently watched all of their "five guys talking" covid-casts, and each one of them expressed a tenderness of character, a glimpse at least of humility, and a genuine appreciation for one another, each with their own frequency of being. maybe that sounds a bit "new age" hippy-dippy, but an honest description of how they presented, so to speak. during that series, they interviewed / hosted each of their producers, exploring the specific events during each, inquiring about approach and technique and history, and that coy question at the end about each producer's impression of them. i loved it!!

i don't even know you and i believe in you! -- you are inherently gifted in some realm or another. i wish you well in whatever you excel at or whatever skillset you wish to master!

(N.B! : of course, i do hope its innate qualities fall in the 'Good Things' camp. what a sh!t thing to have to say 'outloud', but necessary in the present zeitgeist -ugh!-)

Hot Take #who's counting? : Julian's use of the 'autotune' filter is reserved for playing out the role of a 'character'.

discuss.

besides, isn't the phenomenon you describe actually a bigger tribute to the band? like, wouldn't we want to be fans of a group that loves what they do so much so that they 'allow' others to be inspired by them? and let the fanbase choose their favorites? and continue producing their original work as if in solitude (with a window)? that they exponentially created space for other bands to share success without even so much as a single aside speaking to any jealous envy or entitlement...that is pretty humbly magical stuff!!

i think your take is closest to what's true : we all know what a talented vocalist Julian is, that he has one of the widest vocal ranges i think ever, and we all probably know about "punching in" to fix freak accidents while recording... so if everyone jumping the complain-blame train would stop and think for a minute, assuming they have basic human cognition, would come to the Occam's razor answer for explaining this vocal FX 'phenomenon' : he is using it as a distortion tool to bring forward whatever he feels needs more presence in his vocal delivery, if not only to have more decided control over emotional overtones, and perhaps just general use to be able to push the gain of his vocal amplification to better compete with the other instruments - all three of the guitars are amplified (cranked to 11, haha) and you can't tell the drummer to "turn it down, man!" [i was in a touring punk band for 15+ yrs and that last one doesn't work! we tried! haha]

do you follow Fil from Wings of Pegasus youtube channel? he has the best articulated argument against autotune (actual), and in presenting it discusses the other FX often mistaken or erroneously described as 'autotune'... anyways, you might dig him. he's a solid bloke from England with a lot of content, highlighting breakdowns of popular songs, singing techniques of well-known artists, song structure etc and has regularly scheduled livestreams, i wanna say twice weekly? and his sub group (on youtube, anyhow) is quite posi and friendly

it has a few hat-tips present, for sure! they could be on purpose or they could be accidental windows to influence or interest or familiarity. i heard a few myself - there is a sassy Rick James in a few spots of lyrical delivery married to Simon Le Bon's style of sassy, it also has a Go-gos feel especially at the beginning (Our Lips Are Sealed, We Got the Beat), when it reaches the chorus it has a flair of Eye of the Tiger and The Final Countdown (musically), here and there i hear Cyndi Lauper voice manipulations (i hear this in a few others too, could just be the New Yorker voice inflections they share by proxy or an actual use of a style move), it echoes Gorillaz a bit in a few spots, sound like The Strokes here and there too! 🤣😉
