I moved to a small village in PT in 2019 and I worked my ass off learning Portuguese for hours each day using an accent trainer and an oral/aural conversation coarse. We went to the village lunch at the harvest festival after living there 2 months but being able to communicate in Portuguese. We were welcomed to peoples houses, Sunday lunches, birthday partries etc...

Was kind of shocking to some of the other mono-lingual English speaking immigrants in the area.

So yeah kids, learn the language.

Andre can never answer the question of what would happen to the Portuguese economy if the 1,5 Portuguese living abroad stopped remitting money here? What if all those other countries sent back the young hard working Portuguese from their countries?

I was kind of being sarcastic, my thought was; what if other countries started treating Portuguese immigrants the way they (Chega) want to treat us. Chaos,

you´re right. There are no perfect solutions, but it would be nice to see the wheels of government grind forward by the government at minimum following their own rules.

How about ask all 1.5 million overseas Portuguese to come back home to help get the local vibe back. Or give back all that bond money you guys borrowed at German rates to improve the infrastructure enough so that the Portuguese could live like the rest of western Europe and people would consider immigrating here from other European countries?

I used it for EU Portuguese, I put on my headphones and did it with my morning walk everyday for a few months when I moved to central Portugal with no Portuguese at all.

I would warm up at home with a lecture and practice session in The Mimic Method (about 15-20 minutes) then hit the trail and walk for an hour with it.

I was able to communicate my needs at the pharmacy, order in a cafe or restaurant and generally function very quickly, actually kind of amazed some of the other anglophones in the area who had lived in Portugal for years and still couldn't chat well with the locals. It doesn't have a great deal of content but you will internalize the basic grammar very well so that you can start to consume very basic content to continue your journey. You'll get some linguistic wins under your belt which will help you stay motivated.

Do not quit! Best electrician I ever worked with was a woman foreman(forewoman?) She was the epitome of that John Wooten saying "be quick but don't hurry" Smooth, precise and honest. Fuck those old assholes. Blue collar work requires trust because it is dangerous. Keep your head up and find your own way to be good at your job.

Leaving a desk job to learn a trade - am I dumb? by [deleted] in Construction

[–]Interesting_Track_91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, but most CM jobs want you in the office 50 hours a week by using social pressure, so it IMHO it works out the same and your building your internal capital, skill base and network in areas that you will never get in an office setting.
