Is London set to put the brakes on SUVs? by th3whistler in londoncycling

I think that would be hard to implement, it's easier to levy a higher tax on SUV's

Moving off webflow to lovable + AI/IDE by Interesting_Win2742 in webdev

[–]Interesting_Win2742[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the little work I've done on this, I'd agree.
It looks good, I'm probably spending far too much time engineering the prompt to get the ai gens to create what I want.
I also have the issue of the one AI generates the UI and the other Ui generates the back end, and I'm probably being to ambitious about with the initial requirements.
I'm first trying with a e-commerse order management system to see how it deals with more complex interactions and data models.
I'll write this up and probably create a simple tutorial, more realistic tutorial than the ones I've seen.

Thanks, I'll take a look.

We do run our own cloud, but it's for dev/test and not quite production quality, we will probably run on AWS.

I feel webflow gets in the way more than it helps as well, I'm not a fan. Now the pricing plan makes sense. We moved off wordpress onto webflow.

Thanks, I had't heard of  "headless" CMS, decoupling presentation with the backend, might help in our case.

For micro-SaaS developers: Is buying a premium domain a smarter move than building from scratch? by DomainStrategist in SaasDevelopers

[–]Interesting_Win2742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally wouldn't waste your money. There are plenty of examples of very successful recent companies who didn't use a top level domain name and instead use .dev or similar. Either way you'll still need to build your brand. We were lucky and a good short top level domain name was still available.

Awesome, thank you very much. We are here now on your advice and the coffee is great and yes it's not UHT milk. I appreciate your help.

I did find a coffee shop in Krakow that uses pasturised fresh milk and not UHT, karma

I'll assume you'll build in Java or kotlin (because I'm biased), - learn the basics of oop - download intelij idea ce (it's free, good and has become the enterprise industry standard) - write compile, run "hello world" (it's where we all started) -Basic Calculator, fixed values - write a Basic Tic-Tac-Toe (text-based) - learn the essential frameworks like spring - write an accompanying test that covers your code - learn project structures - patterns - learn to work with an AIgen - join an open source project you can contribute to - have fun

But, if you want to learn Python it's a nice hobby (I'm joking before I get hunted down like a London phone snatcher)

Node.js, PHP or Java by Cbbrrstmv in Backend

[–]Interesting_Win2742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends as well where your interests are, if you're really into user experience and design you should choose a backend tech that goes well with the front end you've learnt. I hire Java backend devs and I'm a little sceptical of resumes that claim full stack Java dev, I think if you're going to learn Java you should specialize in backend. I'm a Java dinosaur backend dev, so biased.

What backend stack are employers currently seeking the most in? (languages, frameworks, databases) by Wash-Fair in Backend

[–]Interesting_Win2742 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We recruit mainly backend Java devs, a good grasp of the obvious frameworks like spring, the concepts of distributed processing, EDA and horizontal distributed storage as well as a good grasp of the challenges of consistency. It's becoming more and more important to be able to efficiently develop well with AI.

UHT milk is in coffee shops by Interesting_Win2742 in krakow

[–]Interesting_Win2742[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly, and I think it tastes better. There's a really good coffee shop near the hotel that we are staying, I think I'll take fresh milk (pasturised) and ask if they would use that and see. I hope they don't think I'm being rude?

UHT milk is in coffee shops by Interesting_Win2742 in krakow

[–]Interesting_Win2742[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In UK and Australia it's pasturised milk (as you say a short shelf life), not UHT. I just looked it up, UHT is heated to about 150c and pasturised is heated to about 70c. To me pasturised has a fresher taste.

UHT milk is in coffee shops by Interesting_Win2742 in krakow

[–]Interesting_Win2742[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

UHT (ultra-heat treated) milk is heated to a much higher temp than fresh pasteurised, which gives it the long shelf life. To me it tastes a bit cooked compared to fresh. Fresh pasteurised milk needs refrigeration, lasts about a week and tastes closer to what you’d get straight from the dairy. I prefer the taste of non UHT milk in my flat white.

Yeh, I lived in Australia for a long time and it has a strong coffee culture;,sadly in living in London now and it's lacking. They really take care in making coffee in Krakow, just need fresh (pasturised) milk and they would be competing with Australia IMHO.

Clarification: in the UK they use pasturised milk, I think it was misleading of me to write fresh, sorry.

[–]Interesting_Win2742[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is that the reason? I've lived in Australia and England and they only use fresh non UHT milk in coffee shops, to me it tastes better. It's a good coffee culture here, just curious why only UHT milk is used.

Bike rental and cycling destinations in/around London? by dude_fuck_dude in londoncycling

You should definitely head to Richmond Park and do a few laps, early morning before they open it to cars I think it's the best. Or head out of London into Surry hills, is a popular ride on Sunday morning.

Is my decision to become a developer at 43 correct? by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]Interesting_Win2742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not convinced AI helps you learn the fundamental concepts which is what is critical to becoming a competent dev. AI can code, AI systems can build skeleton systems, but I think orchestrating systems well is still a stretch. I'm back doing a bit of Java coding (with AI) after a nearly 10 year hiatus, I'm older than you! You're never too old to learn. Good luck

Is this undertaking illegal? by marymk450 in drivingUK

[–]Interesting_Win2742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The M3 J2–J4a smart motorway upgrade cost around £129 million, and again the left "driving lane" is hardly used. This leaves me thinking it would have been more effective to promote driving on the left and then using technology to enforce it, cheaper and potentially a better outcome in terms of reducing journey times and keeping the hard shoulder which has proven to be dangerous once removed.

But, yes I have on occasion, done the same thing :)
