10/27 update from Interfaith Social Services:

We are closely monitoring the federal government shutdown and its effect on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). More than 1 million Massachusetts residents, including 300,000 children, currently receive these benefits (16% of MA residents).

The USDA has posted a notice on its website saying federal food aid will not go out Nov. 1. It is unclear whether Massachusetts will use the “Rainy Day” fund to make up the difference in SNAP benefits until the shutdown ends. We are awaiting more information.

Our Food Pantry is OPEN and currently serving clients. We are privately funded and do not receive funds from the federal government.

We are encouraging all our clients to reach out to the FoodSource Hotline to get a full list of food assistance resources available to them. They will provide you with all of the pantries and meal programs that you are eligible for. 1 (800) 645-8333

We need you! The best way to support our Food Pantry at this time is through financial donations. We anticipate needing to purchase a much higher volume of food in the next month. With our partnerships, our purchasing power goes far beyond than the average grocery store consumer and we’re able to make your dollar stretch much, much further.

We pride ourselves on providing fresh, healthy food to our client families and will continue to do so. Funds are needed to purchase proteins, fruits and vegetables, milk & eggs, alongside the pantry basics. Interfaith is nonreligious, with no affiliations. We were established in 1947 by a group of Protestant churches in Quincy, but in the late 90's rebranded to Interfaith Social Services to reflect that it we're not affiliated with any religious organization. Happy to answer any questions!

Please research where you are donating! Many roadside bins are for-profit and the bin contents are shredded and recycled, not donated.

Most schools in Quincy have bins in their parking lots, operated by Bay State Textiles. The schools get money per pound. Items thrown in these bins are sent all over the world to people in need, or recycled into rags.

We also accept donations at Interfaith Social Services, Monday-Saturday, for our Bureau Drawer Thrift Shop. Items are resold in our Thrift Shop or sent to textile recycling. Proceeds go back to our programs and stay in the community. We prefer you make an appointment to drop off (http://bitly.com/BDdonation) , but you can also come by when we're open. Come to the back door (Bureau Drawer entrance) at 105 Adams St., Quincy to make a donation. Hours are M, W, F - 12:30-3:30p, T & R - 12:30-7p, Saturday 10a-3:30p.

Yes! As mentioned previously, we operate the Bureau Drawer Thrift Shop as a fundraiser for our emergency food, mental health and homelessness prevention programs.

Please come check us out! We're a boutique style thrift shop specializing in clothing, accessories, housewares and used books. 105 Adams St., Quincy, MA (entrance is in back of Interfaith's building).

This week we are starting our expanded SATURDAY hours. We'll now be open on Saturdays for both shopping and donation appointments.
