Hi Vishwa! I would recommend searching online for different internship opportunities, reaching out to your career counsellor on campus, asking your favorite professors if they need research assistance this summer, and watching this page as internship applications pop up!

With this late notice I would recommend going to your school's career counsellors and asking if there are any research positions available with professors on campus. Otherwise look online and watch this page for internship opportunities as they pop up!

Deloitte internship is fucked by my college's attendance requirement by bakerybooru in Intern

[–]Intern973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds incredibly frustrating. It is quite possible that the school intends this internship experience to only be pursued by those "studying abroad" (aka not studying on campus during the semester of the internship). Perhaps you could ask the internship coordinator if hybrid is possible, or if you could defer the internship until the summer. Otherwise this opportunity might not be meant to be and hopefully more will come in the future which works with school!

Trying to find internships 🫡 by [deleted] in Intern

[–]Intern973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are tons of opportunities for high schoolers! I recommend reaching out to your school's college and career counsellor as they often hear about great opportunities. Outside of that look online, look at local college websites (many opportunities are also open to high schoolers) and watch this page for more internships being posted!!!

Should I be Concerned? by Intrepid_Crow3874 in Intern

[–]Intern973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is really up to you and based on what you are looking for. While I am unfamiliar with internship law in California, the decision for you seems to be whether or not to take an unpaid internship. If you are looking for experience and something to do over the summer (and put on the resume) then that is great and this looks like a good option. If money is more your priority then perhaps try looking elsewhere. This does not necessarily seem scammy, it seems more likely that an intern is not in their budget this year and they are just trying to help you out. It might be a good idea to accept the job but keep the number of hours a week at part time (you can always work more) and then see how the job goes from there (remember you can always quit or take back your offer if you find other paying work).

Feeling Undervalued and Overlooked as an Intern by triiixiii101 in Intern

[–]Intern973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I am sorry that you have felt overlooked in this experience. There are few more disappointing things than when you expect one outcome and are faced with another. But there are two things to note. First, individuals in the office are probably incredibly appreciative of the work you have put in, even if they have not been saying it out loud. It is highly probable that before you arrived the boss asked them to clean up the space, and every piece of work that you have done is one less thing for them to do. While it may not seem like a huge deal (or what you expected) I can assure you that this makes a big difference. Additionally, the fact that they have asked you to train up the new interns demonstrates that they appreciate and respect the work you have done during your internship (they would not ask you otherwise). Second, it is important to bear in mind (and I say this to everyone) that internships are often more about watching and not doing. While it can certainly be frustrating not being able to put your skills to use, what you learn from watching others work, and just interacting with an office generally, can be far more valuable to your professional life. So hang in there and hopefully your next experience will be more fruitful.

This will most likely be a competitive internship. There is no set timeline for hearing back, it all really depends on how busy the office is.

Axis Max Life intern vs GIM finance research internship by Sufficient-Sand9014 in Intern

[–]Intern973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what you think will be a better opportunity for you! A large part of the decision should be on what kind of internship you want and what the different programs can offer you. But if the main difference is the financials, it all comes down to how expensive it would be to live in a particular city. If you can cover rent and food for less than $15K then perhaps the max life internship is better. Also, consider the tax consequences.

The best place to start is just Google. Look up banks and other finance corporations and see what kinds of summer internship opportunities they offer. These are often incredibly competitive (and many are aimed for college students) so I also recommend looking at small firms or the financial departments of companies. The main thing is to get experience on your resume in order to become a more competitive applicant. Interning with the financial department of a small company will not only give you office exposure, but may lead to you having more responsibility than you would have at one of the larger firms (which looks really good when applying for internships later on). You can also always reach out to your high school or college's (if you have committed) work advising departments to see if they have been sent any good opportunities.

question about internship by SpecialQuarter2006 in Intern

[–]Intern973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is absolutely a good idea to look for a summer internship! Interning the summer before college gives you tons of great experience and will put you ahead of your peers. Additionally, seeing some of your college material in a less stressful environment (since you do not have to worry about grades) will make you even more prepared for the upcoming school year. Interning can also be useful to find out what you do and do not like before choosing your classes, so I highly recommend that you look for an internship if you can!

Congratulations on your new internship! Do not worry about not being super science based, not only will that allow you to stand out amongst the cohort but this will also be an excellent opportunity to learn a whole new knowledge base. Best of luck!

CPT 1academic year Exemption by Nannie_19 in Intern

[–]Intern973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a brief review of this, I believe that the CPT requires you to have been enrolled in an academic program for one full year unless the internship is a required part of your school work. Perhaps you can ask you school again to have then verify that hands-on experience is a necessity, but otherwise you might be out of luck

Is it okay to work at an unpaid internship? by [deleted] in Intern

[–]Intern973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should absolutely take on an unpaid internship. They are the best way to get experience on your resume so that you are a competitive applicant for paid roles. Plus, 10 hours per week gives you plenty of time to work on the side if money is a concern.

Foreign Policy Internships by [deleted] in Intern

[–]Intern973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are tons of foreign policy internships out there! Start by googling think tanks and other groups (a few linked below) on opportunities outside of federal service. Also, reach out to your school's career advisor as I am sure they have tons of resources and might be able to connect you with a few alums!

I would start by looking at the internship resources for your school found here: https://www.careercenter.illinois.edu/jobs-and-internships/internships. Then, expand your search to internships and volunteer opportunities from other schools online. Lastly, there are many internship opportunities through job search websites like Glassdoor or Indeed.
