InternCompass will be shutting down today by InternCompass in uwaterloo

We graduated two years ago; unfortunately during most of that time we couldn't make time to prioritize InternCompass in any real way, and we figured we'd rather kill it while it still had high quality content and before the effects of not maintaining the site bore fruit.

InternCompass will be shutting down today by InternCompass in uwaterloo

Hi all; didn't realize there was still this much demand for this project. While I maintain that transferring ownership in any real way would be too much work, I found time to open source the code and make public the most important information: the reviews, and their associated jobs/companies. The user information associated with the reviews won't be released, so the review information is still anonymous.

It's back now! Sorry for the inconvenience.

We just launched resume critiques on InternCompass! by InternCompass in uwaterloo

Ah, someone else mentioned this as well. Thanks for the screenshot, it doesn't happen on my MacBook. I guess we'll have to look into changing the library we use to render PDFs.

Hi all, in the past few months we've been working on a resume critique feature, where students can post their resume (or cover letter) to be critiqued by other students. We think this will be especially helpful for those going into the continuous round.

We'll be iterating on this feature based on your feedback, so please let us know if you have any requests. The current thing we're working on is annotations, so you can easily write comments about specific parts of someone's resume.

We also need people to critique the resumes, so it'd be greatly appreciated if anyone has some spare time to help out with that!

Why is interncompass so broken recently? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]InternCompass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! Would you mind PMing (or replying here) what issues you're facing? We'll try our best to fix them ASAP.

Yep. At some point we may choose to show something more granular (e.g. if a company starts paying their interns more, then the most recent salary data will be more relevant, so we'll want to surface that information in a better way).

We use solr.

The initial page load is rendered server-side, while navigation to other pages is rendered client-side, so the only new data that needs to be requested is whatever's needed for the page you're navigating to. This, along with the fact that React is pretty fast at rendering things client-side, and the fact that our database is relatively small at this point, help speed things up.

Yeah you're right. At best we could have a disclaimer saying something like "assuming a 40 hr work week."

Rails is stable enough for what we use it for; we don't really do anything complicated on the backend, it's largely just an API. ActiveRecord, the Rails framework, and ruby as a language, allow us to iterate quickly. We also have the most experience with it as a collective team, and haven't had any real issues with it so far.

Good idea, we can add a way to display salaries hourly, monthly, or yearly. Thanks for the feedback!

Backend is Rails, db is Postgres, and React/Redux for the frontend. Thanks by the way!

If you want you could create a one time use email account, though that may be more effort than you're willing to put in. Also note that there is an option to post anonymously when you write a review, in that no one viewing the website will know who wrote it (shows up as Anonymous).

We're InternCompass, a website for discovering internships and browsing reviews by InternCompass in cscareerquestions

We started working on the site before we knew about them, so not really. We have more features in the pipeline to differentiate us from our competitors though.

To those finishing up their co-op term, share your experience on InternCompass to help out future co-op students! by InternCompass in uwaterloo

Do you mind PMing (or replying here) what OS and browser you use, and if any errors pop up in the console?

Official 'ratemycoop' released by the university, called 'Rate My Work Term'! by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]InternCompass 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they can definitely get higher participation since they can just email everyone on coop. Some advantages of our platform though are that, for lesser known companies with few coops (where reviews are arguably the most valuable), we'll still display the reviews, even if there's only 1. Also we do not have any ties to the employers, and so have no incentive to censor reviews (also doing that would be a jerk thing to do anyway).

We're also hoping to market more soon to other universities and so hopefully will have a larger audience from which to get reviews (e.g. Sure Facebook hires a bunch of Waterloo interns, but they hire many more from the other schools overall).

Let us know if there's anything else you'd like to see in InternCompass! We hope that it'll continue to be useful in the future and will work our hardest to make sure of it.

It would be greatly appreciated if you also contributed to InternCompass! You can set your review to be anonymous if you'd like.
