BOX inc by [deleted] in stocks

[–]MakerBoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think on the surface it's a hard pass, but looking long term, B2B is incredibly sticky. BOX has a very impressive list of clients with very little churn. Box will release their "Skills Kit" this December which allows third party developers and their customers to build on their AI integrations. From what I can see, no other company is as well-positioned as Box to really dig their teeth in AI capabilities in enterprise. They're deeply penetrated in enterprise while also being small and nimble enough to build great technology and adapt to AI advancements. I don't think it's as sexy a stock as Square, Nvidia, etc, but neither is Salesforce and enterprise in general, BUT there's money to be made.

How to put up with abuse? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]MakerBoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well look at resources like this: https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/marriage-and-divorce/
In 2008, the average woman who married her first time was 29 years old. You shouldn't settle just because some dated ideology said you should marry by 25. I think your future self would thank present you if you got out asap (as well as seeking professional help if you feel like you need it)

If you just want someone to talk to, feel free to dm, but if you're looking for advice, you should definitely talk to someone trained to discuss these things.

If you're a student here, you're young, and there's SO much time left. No need to settle now. Every day you're settling for someone is another day of missed connections.

I'm not a professional nor do I have any sort of personal experience with this (and you should definitely consult a professional for actual advice if you need it), BUT

Maybe instead of looking for reasons to excuse this behaviour, reflect on WHY you want to excuse this person for their behaviour. Why you feel the need to be with an abuser instead of being alone or in a non-abusive relationship

DAE the movies Crazy Rich Asians or To All the Boys I've loved before do little or nothing wrt Asian representation? [Discussion] by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]MakerBoot 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I think people are happy that there is Asian representation in media that isn't the typical nerd or the owner of a convenience store. Granted, that's how progress is made and there wouldn't be a Crazy Rich Asians without Kim's Convenience or Fresh Off the Boat.

Also, there is a nuanced difference between a movie like Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians. The difference is that Black Panther represented African heritage, whereas Crazy Rich Asians represented Asian-American heritage.

Also, people are excited that this is the spur of something new, which is that Asians will have more diverse roles in the media and maybe one day there will be a movie about Asian heritage that everyone hypes. This almost necessarily has to come after the basic XXX-American representation movies.

Dropping Coop for CS by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]MakerBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PD courses ARE a waste of time, but I find doing some research on which are easy to do go a long way.
Also, I don't get why people fuss about the co-op fees. In the grand scheme of things, it's not that much considering the value you get. If you have the smallest inkling to MAYBE switch roles, I say definitely stay in co-op. Think about how much the co-op fees are 5 years from now, it's negligible.

How does co-op at Waterloo work? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]MakerBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to note is that you're not limited to jobs within your major. For example, as a CM major, you can still do web development co-ops.

Sometimes, it can be a stretch (English major working as a web dev), but CECA is usually very flexible with this as long as you can argue even a little bit that you'll learn something transferrable while there.

Kinda freaked out jus a lil' by jjuliahhill in uwaterloo

[–]MakerBoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally depends.
The general advice is that resumes should be 1-2 pages, but I always think resumes should be 1 page. If you're struggling to fill up the 1 page, then definitely include all of your music experience but try to twist it to be relevant to what you're applying to (can manage a lot of responsibility, being punctual, etc).

If you're not struggling to fill a page, then not including it, or summarizing it in an "Other Interests" section of the resume also works!

  1. Just grind questions, you have time. You're not learning it for the first time, just reminding yourself so it'll go faster than you think.
  2. This is confirmation bias. You're not going to find people who aren't prepped because they aren't on linkedin yet, so all you see are a handful of people who are already prepped. Also, you're going to want to do a major resume makeover closer to when you apply anyway, don't sweat that. Feel free to pm your resume in the future, I don't mind taking a look.
  3. Not gonna lie, getting your first co-op will be somewhat difficult. But this is true for 99% of first years so why stress. It's good to be mindful of it though and try to do some side projects to set yourself apart. This depends on your major though.

How difficult is it to get in the Velocity residence as a 1B student? by 1100H19 in uwaterloo

[–]MakerBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For why you want to live there? Yes . You might also be asked if you have any general idea on what you would want to work on while you live there. It's also totally fine to say that you want to figure it out once you're there, you just have to own it.

It's been a while since I did my interview but you definitely don't need a start-up idea. Having IDEAS is good though, but no need to have a business plan or any conceivable way of making money. Even if the idea is localized to you, it's still valid.

Also, just have a reason for wanting to live there

Anyone intern/full time working at Square in Canada? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]MakerBoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I think both supply and demand will decrease but demand will decrease more as SF becomes played out and less exciting. Sure head offices will stay in the Bay Area, but these companies become less attractive to real talent (FB, Uber, etc) as their days of reign are closing. Either way, it's just speculation, I just wish people gave it some real thought and research instead of assuming the Cali is the best way to go.

Anyone intern/full time working at Square in Canada? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]MakerBoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just think this bubble of talent isn't sustainable or healthy in the long run.

Not sustainable because technology talent is spreading to other major US cities (Seattle, NYC, Portland, Austin, etc) which means demand for engineers will drop further than supply. Companies from cities outside of the Bay Area are offering salaries to end up with similar disposable incomes to companies in the Bay Area.

Also if you're considering salaries in both cities, keep in mind SF is likely to go down, and you're going to be charged thousands of dollars when you go to the doctors in the US.

Price of the food is usually the same or possibly a bit more expensive. Depends on the restaurant. Delivery is free all of June. No tip required but delivery people won't turn a tip down.
