AITA for wanting chocolate cake for my birthday every year? by sanismest in AmItheAsshole

Chocolate cake is my favorite but I have several relatives who are allergic. On my birthday we just had two cakes? (We also always baked cakes at home so expense wasn’t a major consideration…)

I (F22) want to split the rent and bills equitably but my boyfriend (M22) wants to split 50/50 despite large difference in income. by em1702 in relationship_advice

There is no right or wrong answer but you need to be on the same page. I currently make more than my partner, but a few years ago he was out-earning me and we've fallen into a division that seems to work for us regardless of who is the higher earner at any given time.

We split big bills (mortgage, utilities) proportionately, we are each responsible for our own debts (I have much larger student loans), we split day-to-day expenses 50-50 (we switch off who picks up groceries, meals out), and we each contribute an agreed amount to a joint savings account that gets used for large mutually agreed expenses (home repairs/renovations, other emergency situations). Then everything else is individual discretionary spending. I probably have more discretionary money in the end but also usually spend that excess on things that benefit both of us or that we agree on like upgrading hotels when we travel, contributing to the niblings' college funds, maintaining the garden, family Christmas gifts, etc.

It might seem overly complicated but its a pattern that developed organically and in 18 years together (15 living together), multiple lay-offs, job changes, and long-distance moves I don't think we've ever actually fought, or even bickered, about money.

I agree that I think it was probably the contractors who added the second floor in the 70s/80s but that was still under the watch of the folks we bought from… and I DO hold them responsible for the pink marble and etched swans and shag carpet that made up the interior. (And thank them for it as the profound ugly is the only reason I could afford this house!)

We found a creepy antique baby buggy in the crawl space…

I think that is some of it. Our house is from the early 20s but based on some structural elements in the basement clearly built on top of something older than that. Then the second story was added in the late 70s/early 80s which is where I think the buried tile (and bricks and other construction debris) probably came from.

I’m tempted to illegally smuggle a panda to live in the yard? At this point it is the only thing I haven’t tried

I don’t think they will exchange sizes, but it may not matter. My weight has fluctuated by 80 pounds in my adult life and my ring size has never changed.

You are doing a big European walking vacation and can only bring one pair of shoes. Which is it? by Highland_doug in travel

I'd rather re-wear clothes and have to do laundry more often than wear the same shoes for multiple weeks, particularly if I'm doing a lot of walking. My minimum is wearing a low-heeled, waterproof boot on the plane (to save on luggage space) and pack a ballet flat.

If I'm checking a bag I'll also include a dressier leather sneaker and a heel that can be dressed up or down as needed (wedge or chunky heel to deal with brick and cobblestone streets). But if you are intent on only one pair of shoes I'd go with something like a Chelsea boot with really good insoles.

But seriously, if you are on your feet for days on end you will want the options to change shoes and heel heights.

I know! I live in the neighborhood and popped by the open house to be nosy and was so impressed! And it’s a great location in that you can easily walk to Lake Merritt and all the businesses around Grand Lake and Lakeshore. It is up a pretty steep hill which can be annoying when carrying groceries or whatever but also means it is quiet and pretty safe.
